In a viral X post, the legendary batter, who is also a big fan of MSD, can be heard expressing his wish that the former CSK should never retire from the IPL and even opining that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) won’t have any issue if the former Indian skipper does the same.

Many have speculated that Dhoni won’t return to the IPL next year after the CSK failed to secure an IPL 2024 playoff berth after a crushing defeat against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) two weeks ago.

This loss not only dashed CSK's hopes for another IPL title but also seemingly disrupted what many believed would be Dhoni's perfect farewell from the world’s biggest T20 league.

After the match, Dhoni's actions added fuel to the speculations, as he quietly left the stadium instead of engaging with the players, and the media, or making public appearances. Even later, he was spotted riding his bike on the roads of Ranchi, leaving his fans and cricket analysts guessing about his next move.

CSK, known for their transparent communication, has also remained silent on Dhoni's future, with their CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, repeatedly saying that he is unaware of what lies ahead for India’s most successful captain.

However, many remain hopeful that the iconic cricketer will return next season to help CSK win a record sixth IPL title and further cement his legacy with the 'Yellove Army'.

Gavaskar suggested that Dhoni should never formally retire from the IPL, as he suggested that the legendary cricketer could take on a role similar to that seen in the Davis Cup, where players are part of the team without necessarily playing in every match.

Gavaskar reportedly made these remarks while commentating during the IPL 2024 final between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai, where Shreyas Iyer’s team won the title with an 8-wicket win on May 26.
