England opener Ben Duckett discussed Shubman Gill’s fortunate survival from a close LBW call during India’s first innings in the series opener. Ben Duckett expressed his belief that Shubman Gill’s LBW dismissal could have shifted the game in England’s favor on Day 1.
The Indian team got off to a good start in their first innings during the ongoing Test match. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma added an 80-run stand in just 12.2 overs. However, Rohit failed to continue his start as he was dismissed for 24 runs off 27 deliveries.
Feels Like A Tricky Pitch To Start On – Ben Duckett
Speaking to reporters, Ben Duckett expressed surprise as the ball bounced over the stumps during a potential LBW chance against Shubman Gill. Duckett emphasized the team’s commitment to their strategy of taking wickets.
“It feels like a tricky pitch to start on,” Duckett told reporters.
“Shubman (Gill) there, we could have had him. It looked like a dead lbw (when he was struck on the pad by Tom Hartley) and somehow, it’s bouncing over the stumps. It’s one of those things.”
“We’ll stick to our mantra and that’s taking wickets and looking to be positive. Hopefully, that will happen for us as well,” he added.
England decided to challenge the umpire’s LBW decision when Shubman Gill was on one run. However, the replays showed the ball bouncing over the leg stump. Gill’s height proved advantageous as the ball hit his pads while playing a forward defensive shot.
They Played Really Well And Were Very Attacking – Ben Duckett
Ben Duckett praised Yashasvi Jaiswal for his aggressive approach, which put England on the back foot. Duckett expressed confidence in England’s ability to achieve significant breakthroughs in the next session.
“You have to pay credit to them… they played really well and were very attacking, which is positive. They don’t always go about it like that, so to go about it that way shows that they probably think that pitch is going to get quite a bit worse,” Duckett further stated.
“That’s going to happen out here, and that’s something that we’ll have good belief in when we’re bowling. We could easily take three or four (wickets) tomorrow morning for 10 runs.”
Yashasvi Jaiswal displayed aggression from the start in India’s first innings. The opener welcomed debutant Tom Hartley with a six. He reached his half-century in just 47 deliveries. However, he added only four runs to his overnight score, getting dismissed for 80 runs.
English openers Ben Duckett and Jack Crawley added a 55-run partnership for the first wicket. However, the team lost three wickets in quick succession. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow contributed to a 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket in England’s first innings.
Ben Stokes scored 70 runs off 88 deliveries, including six boundaries and three sixes. Bumrah picked Stokes to bowl out the opposition for 246 runs in 64.3 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin was the standout performer for the home team, securing three wickets for 68 runs.
