The ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 has been hit by two fresh injury setbacks as Zimbabwe and Ireland have both lost senior players in the middle of the tournament in India and Sri Lanka.
Brendan Taylor ruled out after hamstring injury
Zimbabwe’s senior wicketkeeper-batter Brendan Taylor is out of the remaining matches because of a hamstring injury. The 40-year-old got injured during Zimbabwe’s opening match against Oman. He was batting 31 runs from 30 balls when he felt pain and had to retire hurt.
Before the blow, Taylor had already taken three catches behind the stumps. Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza confirmed the setback in Colombo. However, Zimbabwe has not named any replacement yet for Taylor despite having two group games left in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Tadiwanashe Marumani will now do wicketkeeping duties, while all-rounder Tony Munyonga has been added to the playing XI for their crucial group match against Australia in Colombo.
Brendan Taylor's dramatic Zimbabwe comeback
Brendan Taylor returned to international cricket in July 2025 after finishing a three-and-a-half-year suspension for his involvement in an ICC corruption case. Once his ban ended on July 25, Zimbabwe quickly brought the senior star back into the national setup across the formats.
Since his comeback, Taylor has played two Test matches, two ODIs, and 14 T20Is for Zimbabwe. One of his biggest highlights came during a T20 World Cup qualifying match in September 2025, where he smashed a superb 123 against Botswana.
Ireland captain Paul Stirling ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2026
On the other hand, Ireland captain Paul Stirling has suffered ligament damage in his right knee and will miss the rest of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. He first injured his knee while taking a catch during Ireland’s 67-run loss to Australia in their group match on February 11.
Later in the same match, the Ireland captain made the injury worse while running for a quick single. The T20 World Cup technical committee has approved young batter Sam Topping as Stirling’s replacement for the rest of the tournament in India and Sri Lanka.
Here’s Ireland’s updated squad:
Mark Adair, Ross Adair, Ben Calitz, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Matthew Humphreys, Josh Little, Lorcan Tucker, Sam Topping, Ben White, Barry McCarthy, Harry Tector, Tim Tector, Craig Young

Australia vs Zimbabwe clash turns do-or-die
The ongoing Group B match is really important for both teams, as Australia and Zimbabwe both have two points, and they have two games left each in the group stage.
A win at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, on Friday, February 13, will boost either Zimbabwe or Australia’s chances for the Super 8 round of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026.
Sri Lanka is already leading the Group B points table with four points and a massive +3.125 net run rate. So, the fight for the Super 8 is currently wide and open.
Speaking about Ireland, they have already lost both their first two group matches, and their net run rate of -2.175 will not help them either. They are far behind in the Super 8 race along with Oman—both have lost their previous two groups.
