The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) changed its stance on boycotting the T20 World Cup 2026 clash against India on the opening day of the tournament. According to reports, the PCB approached the International Cricket Council (ICC) to open talks on withdrawing its boycott of the match against the archrivals.
Pakistan decided to skip their match against India to show support for Bangladesh after their removal from the event. However, the fixture is crucial to the event’s commercial success, which led to multiple back-channel discussions aimed at persuading Pakistan to reconsider their position and reverse the boycott.
Pakistan Cricket Board Reopens Talks With ICC Over India Match
Pakistan have changed their stand on the India match after fresh communication from the ICC. The possibility of the high-profile clash being played in Colombo next week reopened on the opening day of the T20 World Cup.
Earlier, the PCB had informed the ICC that it would skip the Group A match against India. The board said it was acting on instructions from the Pakistan government and invoked the Force Majeure clause just before the tournament began.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the ICC responded with a detailed communication questioning the late withdrawal. After this exchange, the PCB approached the ICC again to open talks and review its earlier decision.
Under ICC rules, the Force Majeure clause applies only in exceptional cases such as government orders, war, or natural disasters. The board using the clause must prove that playing the match was truly unavoidable and that it took all reasonable steps to reduce the impact.
ICC Rejects Boycott Claim, Warns of Wider Consequences
The report added that the ICC did not accept the explanation given by the PCB for skipping the match against India. The ICC also warned that such a move could have serious sporting, commercial, and governance impacts.
“The ICC will now engage in a structured manner to solve the problem; there would be a dialogue, not confrontation,” an official told the national daily.
“Subsequent to the receipt of formal communication from the ICC, the PCB approached the international body to initiate further dialogue. The ICC is currently engaging with the board in a structured manner to explore possible resolutions.”
ICC and Sri Lanka Cricket Push Pakistan to Reconsider
The ICC explained the Force Majeure clause and warned about possible financial and regulatory consequences, which led to a shift in Pakistan’s position. For the first time since Pakistan threatened a late withdrawal last month, the game in Colombo next week now looks possible.
The PCB also received a formal message from Sri Lanka Cricket, asking it to rethink the boycott. SLC reminded Pakistan of the support Sri Lanka has provided to maintain cricketing ties during difficult times.
This development followed Pakistan’s opening match of the T20 World Cup, where they registered a tense three-wicket win over the Netherlands in Colombo. Pakistan will next play the USA at the same venue on February 12.
