According to several media reports, around three lakh fans had gathered outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate RCB’s IPL 2025 triumph over Punjab Kings. But there were no control arrangements for such a huge crowd, leading to a horrifying stampede.

Helpless fans were crushed in the crowd, and screams filled the air as they tried to find a way out, and then the lack of timely intervention only worsened the situation. Police forces attempted to manage the situation, and even they were eventually forced to use mild force to bring back some order. However, by then, the damage was already done.

It's really shocking for us: BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia

Devajit Saikia was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times, “I am just not shocked but disgraced by this incident. This event of tragedy has happened in the victory celebrations in Bengaluru today. It was such a wonderful and colorful closing of the IPL. It's really shocking for us.

We are really frustrated to hear this kind of news, and we are extremely sorry. We extend our heartfelt condolences to all the members of the bereaved families, and we also pray that whoever is injured will recover at the earliest.”

Even as emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, celebrations continued inside the stadium. However, Saikia refused to comment on why the event wasn't halted but pointed fingers at the local authorities and event organizers for failing to ensure basic safety protocols for such an event.

BCCI refuses to comment as celebrations continue while chaos unfolds outside the stadium

The BCCI secretary added, “I do not know. What is the ground reality? There may be a lot of other reasons. We don't know what the further outcome could have been. It will not be proper for me to pass any comment. My only concern is that there must have been some serious lapses on the part of the organizers and the district authorities in allowing this kind of event where so many people gathered without following the due protocols of safety, security, and law and order.”

Meanwhile, Devajit Saikia highlighted the importance of proper planning and coordination during large public celebrations. He pointed out that when events are organized by the BCCI or any cricket body, there are usually clear protocols in place, with support from district authorities and the police to ensure no such situation happens, even if the crowd comes in huge numbers.

Referring to recent successful events like the massive crowd gathering in Ahmedabad during the IPL final or India’s 2024 T20 World Cup-winning celebrations in Mumbai, Saikia explained that these events had clear safety protocols in place. Despite lakhs of fans attending, everything ran smoothly because the arrangements were well-managed and disciplined.

The proper protocol was not maintained in Bengaluru: BCCI

Well, the BCCI secretary expressed deep concern over the tragic stampede in Bengaluru, stating that the incident happened because proper safety protocols were not followed. He pointed out that planning an event of such scale in a short time may have led to mistakes, which caused the chaos.

Saikia signed off by saying, “The proper protocol was not maintained in Karnataka today in Bengaluru. It was such a short time. I do not know; it is not possible to plan this kind of event at such short notice. So maybe somebody has made some mistake at some point in time.

As a result, this unfortunate event or tragedy has taken place, as a result of which so many cricket lovers and so many cricket fans have lost their lives, and so many others have gotten injured in the incident.”
