On Saturday, November 25, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) announced that the premier England batsman Joe Root has decided to opt out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

The announcement came ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 retention day. Notably, the IPL 2024 auction will be a mini-auction and it is scheduled to be held on December 19 in Dubai. BCCI has set November 26 as the deadline for the franchises to announce the list of retained and released players.

Joe Root is regarded as one of the greatest England batsmen of all time but surprisingly he hasn’t played a lot in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He entered the IPL auction in 2018 and went unsold. Root was finally picked by the Rajasthan Royals (RR) for INR 1 crore at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auction and in the same year, he made his IPL debut.

Joe Root played three matches in the league and scored 10 runs. Also, with the ball, he bowled 2 overs where he conceded 14 runs while going wicketless.

Joe Root Makes Himself Unavailable For IPL 2024

On Saturday, Royal confirmed that Joe Root will not be taking part in next year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), but no specific reason was mentioned for his unavailability.

“The 32-year-old’s addition to the Royals squad brought in plenty of depth and experience, which served as a learning experience for a lot of youngsters in the side like Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, Yashasvi Jaiswal in the team,” RR said in an official media release.

Kumar Sangakkara, Royals’ Director of Cricket, in an official statement issued by the franchise, said that Joe Root created a positive impact on the franchise and they respect his decision to pull out. He elaborated:

“During our retention conversations, Joe informed us of his decision to not take part in IPL 2024. Even in a short span of time, Joe was able to create such a positive impact on the franchise and the players around him. His energy around the group and the experience he brought to the Royals will be missed. We respect his decision totally and wish him success in everything he does.”

Joe Root is not the first England National Cricket Team player to opt out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as earlier his England Test skipper Ben Stokes had done the same in a massive blow for the CSK. The duo will be seen in action when England take on India in a five-match Test series ahead of the IPL.
