The Women’s Premier League (WPL) team UP Warriorz have suffered a massive blow as young batter Vrinda Dinesh has been ruled out of the entire competition after suffering an injury.

UP Warriorz have performed quite well in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 and have won 2 out of 4 matches. With 4 points in their bag, the Warriorz sit at the third spot on the points table, behind Delhi Capitals Women and Mumbai Indians Women.

The Alyssa Healy-led team are currently taking on the Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bangalore Women in the 11th match of WPL 2024 at the Chinnaswamy stadium, Bengaluru.

Just before the start of the match, it was announced that the UP Warriorz would be missing the services of Vrinda Dinesh for the rest of the season as she has been ruled out of the competition after suffering a shoulder injury during Match 6 (28th February) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru against Mumbai Indians.

Uma Chetry named Vrinda Dinesh’s replacement at UP Warriorz for WPL 2024

To replace Vrinda Dinesh, the UP Warriorz have roped in the wicketkeeper-batter Uma Chetry for INR 10 lakh. She was recently seen in action for India A against England A and she was also a part of the India A Emerging squad that won the ACC Emerging Women’s Asia Cup 2023.

“The UP Warriorz have signed wicket-keeper batter Uma Chetry as a replacement at her reserve price of INR 10 lakhs. Uma recently played for India A against England A and was also a part of the victorious India A Emerging squad that won the ACC Emerging Women’s Asia Cup 2023,” the official media release read.

Talking about Vrinda, she was bought for a whopping Rs 1.3 crore at the WPL 2024 auction, becoming one of the most expensive uncapped players in history. She played 3 matches in the league against RCB Women, DC Women, and MI Women and managed to score just 18 runs.

Vrinda had a great run with Karnataka in the 2023 Senior Women’s One-Day competition as she finished as the third-highest run-getter in the tournament. The young batter scored 477 runs in 11 innings.

Coming back to the UP Warriorz vs RCB Women, the Warriorz won the toss and have opted to bowl. The decision hasn’t proved that good for the side as the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women have scored 88 runs at the loss of 1 wicket in 11 overs at the time of writing this report.

Speaking before the match, the UP Warriorz star Chamari Athapaththu, who is regarded as one of the best women cricketers in the world, talked about the difference between the WPL and WBBL. She said that both the tournaments have different vibes and conditions and the WPL offers an atmosphere closer to Sri Lanka.

“Different conditions, different atmosphere, a lot of people are here, that’s a really good thing here. WBBL – teams, team environment is different. WPL is very similar to Sri Lanka, conditions also similar to Sri Lanka and atmosphere also. I am happy to be part of this WPL. I love to be part of UP Warriorz, I want to be a good team player all the time,” she elaborated.
