The Afghanistan Cricket Team scripted history by thrashing Bangladesh by a mere eight runs via the DLS method in a rail-curtailed Super-8 clash of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 at the Arnos Vale Stadium in Kingstown, St. Vincent, on Tuesday, June 25.

The Rashid Khan-led Afghan team etched their name into the record books by qualifying for the semifinals of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Afghanistan qualified for the semifinals for the first time in T20 World Cup history, and Rashid was one of the heroes in their scripting history.

Afghanistan has joined India from Group 1 at the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals, and they will now face the unbeaten side of the tournament, South Africa, in the first semifinal at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad & Tobago on June 27.

Afghanistan’s historic win over Bangladesh meant that Australia’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign was over, and this Asian team proved too costly for the Kangaroos. In this edition of the tournament, the Afghanistan team defeated the world’s top teams like New Zealand and Australia, and now Bangladesh will play their maiden semifinal.

Speaking about the crucial AFG vs BAN Super-8 match, Afghanistan managed to post 115/5 in their 20 overs against Bangladesh, thanks to Rashid Khan’s brisk 10-ball 19, including three sixes, after winning the toss at St. Vincent on Tuesday.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (43) and Ibrahim Zadran (18) provided Afghanistan with a with a good start on the tricky pitch, but the middle-order batters failed to deliver against the Bangladesh team. However, Rashid Khan’s cameo took the Afghanistan team to a respectable total, and then the bowlers did a remarkable job.

At the stage, it seemed that the Tigers would have easily won the game after the target was revised to 114 runs in 19 overs, but it was the captain and spin wizard Rashid (4/23) and Naveen-ul-Haq (4/26) who did unthinkable for Afghanistan. They have shattered Australia’s semifinal hopes by winning the Super-8 clash by eight runs via the DLS method at St. Vincent.

Rashid Khan said at the post-match presentation: “It's something like a dream for us as a team being in the semifinal. It's all about the way we have started the tournament. The belief came while we beat NZ. I don't have any words to describe the feeling. The only guy who put us in the semifinal was Brian Lara and we proved it right.

I told him we won't let you down. The country will be very proud back home. Being in the semis is big now, we have to go with a clear mind. We'll have to keep things simple and make sure we enjoy the big occasion.”
