Despite the horrendous show in the Ashes against the arch-rival Australia, where England suffered a 1-4 defeat, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) showed their support to the head coach, Brendon McCullum.

The Three Lions are heading towards another packed summer season, which is considered the stage of the team’s redemption. Ahead of the upcoming series, England’s head coach Brendon McCullum opens his mouth on the team’s previous performances under his coaching and how they could perform in the future as well.

Brendon McCullum faced the media for the first time since his job as head coach was secured after the Ashes

McCullum says that it is hard to accept the heavy defeat against Australia, but the truth is the truth. For some cricket fans, the head coach’s comments sound more than sharp.

Amid the discussions around the interview, former England batter Kevin Pietersen claims again that Brendon McCullum’s regime as the national cricket team’s head coach is approaching to it’s end.

KKR goes through another disastrous season

Pietersen strongly believes that after leaving the England cricket team’s job, the former New Zealand opener, who played for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as well in the IPL, will join the KKR camp again, but this time as the head coach.

Ahead of the IPL 2026 season, Kolkata Knight Riders appointed Abhishek Nayar as their head coach. Under the guidance of Nayar, the multiple-time IPL-winning franchise failed to qualify for the play-offs as they had to endure a long losing streak in the first half of the IPL 2026 group stage.

The team tried to make a comeback; they claimed multiple wins as well, but it was not enough for them to secure a place in the top four of the points table. As soon as the season ended for the team, it was reported that the franchise would review the performance of the entire team, including the coach.

Kevin Pietersen claims again on McCullum's future

“Just seen clips of Baz McCullum's interview and also some UK journalists' comments after it. The knives are out in a BIG WAY! I've watched this movie before. Poor summer results and Baz will coach KKR next IPL season,” Kevin Pietersen wrote this on his ‘X’ post on May 30.

On April 17, 2026, the former English batter, for the first time, claimed that Brendon McCullum would be KKR’s new head coach for the next season.

“Baz McCullum will be the coach of KKR next season. Bookmark this tweet: Pietersen stated this on April 17.

During the recent interview, when Brendon McCullum was describing their preparations for the Ashes and what their mentality was before the tournament, he mentioned that he planned to finish the job that they started.

“The period of reflection post-Ashes has actually been pretty good to get some clarity around some of those things as well. From my point of view, I was always very keen to finish the job that we started,” McCullum told the media.
