Former West Indies captain and legendary batsman Brian Lara has reckoned that the Royal Challengers Bangalore will miss the services of uncapped opener Devdutt Padikkal in the initial stages of the 14th season of the Indian Premier League.

Devdutt Padikkal was diagnosed with Covid ahead of the start of the 14th season and although he has recovered and has started training, he did not play in the tournament opener against Mumbai Indians and is likely to miss a few more games.

In his absence, RCB promoted off-spinning all-rounder Washington Sundar to the top of the order, a move that did not work as the Tamil Nadu cricketer managed a 16-ball 10.

“He provided a fresh air going in there. Aaron Finch didn’t do very well and he got replaced, but if there was one constant it was Padikkal. They are going to miss him at the very beginning of the tournament,” Brian Lara said on Star Sports.

Devdutt Padikkal had a breakout IPL season last year. Having spent the entire IPL 2019 on the bench, Padikkal announced himself in grand style in the following season as he became just the second uncapped player to smash more than 400 runs in his debut season.

Padikkal smashed a total of 473 runs in 15 games with five 50-plus scores, leaving everyone including Brian Lara impressed with his precocious talent.

However, there were certain things that the legendary Lara wasn’t impressed with and he said that he would love to have a discussion with the young left-hander about it.

”Of course, that left-right combination as well is so very important. Hopefully he gets back in fit. I was really impressed with a few things, unimpressed with a few things as well which I’d love to love to speak to him about but he’s pretty much got a bright future,” Lara pointed out.
