Australian all-rounder Cameron Green lit up Mackay with his explosive batting, as he blasted his maiden ODI century in breathtaking style in the ongoing third and final match against South Africa on Sunday, August 8, at the Great Barrier Reef Arena.

Walking in at No. 3 when Australia was already cruising at 250, Cameron Green shifted gears instantly and tore into the South African bowling attack. He brought up his hundred in just 47 balls, smashing five boundaries and launching seven towering sixes into the stands.

Cameron Green smashes the second-fastest ODI hundred by an Australian

Green’s whirlwind knock not only powered Australia to 431/2 on the board in the 50 overs but also etched his name in the record books. He smashed the second-fastest century ever by an Australian in ODI cricket, with Glenn Maxwell leading the chart.

The 26-year-old all-rounder’s century is now the 11th fastest in ODI history and the second-fastest by an Australian cricketer, just behind another explosive all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell’s famous 40-ball blitz against the Netherlands in the 2023 World Cup in India.

Cameron Green was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz during the innings break: “I wasn't quite ready to come in to bat. A couple of twos at the start got me going. Marsh and Head batted beautifully. It came off well today; it doesn't always come off. So really happy. We haven't played much one-day cricket of late. Got an opportunity today, so it was nice.”

Australia made history in the ODI cricket

Meanwhile, all of Australia’s top three batters—Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and Cameron Green—have smashed centuries in the same innings for the first time in ODI history. Travis Head played in his usual attacking style, scoring 142 runs off 103 balls, studded with 17 boundaries and 5 sixes.

Australia’s stand-in captain, Mitchell Marsh, balanced aggression with patience and went on to hammer 100 runs off 106 balls, laced with 6 boundaries and 5 sixes in the ongoing final ODI against South Africa. At the end, Green used his height to send the ball flying all around the ground.

Green remained unbeaten on 118 runs off 55 balls, laced with 6 boundaries and 8 sixes. On the other hand, Alex Carey remained unbeaten on 50 as they handed a 432-run target to South Africa to clean sweep the series, having taken a 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

Australia enter the record books with twin stands

In the ongoing third and final ODI, Marsh and Head added 205 runs for the first wicket, and then Carey and Green stitched together an unbeaten 164-run stand for the third wicket against South Africa. With these partnerships, Australia scripted a record of doing so in the ODI cricket.

The Australian team recorded two 150-plus partnerships in an ODI innings for the first time. Additionally, it is only the 10th time any team in the world has managed to achieve such a feat. Furthermore, Australia’s incredible score of 431/2 in Mackay has entered the record books.

It was the second-highest total ever made by a team while losing just two wickets in the ODI cricket. South Africa’s 439/2 against the West Indies in Johannesburg back in 2015 remained the highest total.
