India's path to the Women's T20 World Cup semi-finals has become more challenging after their defeat to South Africa in Manchester. The result has opened up the race for the semi-finals in Group A. India, South Africa, and Australia are all still in contention, but none of the teams can afford many more mistakes. The Women in Blue need strong performances in their remaining group stage matches to stay in the race for a knockout berth.
India's Semi-Final Hopes Depend on Final Two Group Matches
India are currently second in Group A with four points from three matches and a net run rate (NRR) of +2.511. However, Harmanpreet Kaur's side still has work to do to secure a place in the semi-finals. Their remaining matches against Bangladesh and Australia will determine their fate in the tournament.
The simplest route to the semi-finals is to win both remaining matches. Two victories would take India to eight points and put them in a strong position to finish in the top two. Another defeat, however, would leave their qualification hopes hanging by a thread and dependent on other results.
Only the top two teams from each group advance to the semi-finals. Net run rate could become crucial if India, South Africa, and Australia finish level on points. All three teams are still capable of ending the group stage on eight points.
Australia and South Africa Hold the Advantage in Group A
Australia are at the top position in Group A after winning all three of their matches. They sit at the top of the table with six points and an impressive net run rate of +4.391. Meanwhile, Pakistan and the Netherlands are already out of the semi-final race.
South Africa have put themselves in a strong position after back-to-back wins over Pakistan and India. Laura Wolvaardt's side still has matches against the Netherlands and Bangladesh and can reach eight points if they win both games. However, their net run rate of -0.546 remains a concern.
The Proteas suffered a heavy defeat to Australia in their opening match, which damaged their net run rate. South Africa need convincing wins in their remaining fixtures. India will hope South Africa lost at least one match, which would improve their own chances of reaching the semi-finals.
India Face Must-Win Matches After Defeat to South Africa
India failed to defend a competitive total of 158 against South Africa at Old Trafford. Despite good spells from Shafali Verma and Shree Charani, the bowlers could not stop the chase. Marizanne Kapp led South Africa's charge with an unbeaten 81 off 45 balls.
The defeat has put India under pressure in the race for a semi-final spot. Harmanpreet Kaur's side can no longer afford mistakes and must deliver strong performances in their remaining Group A matches. The loss also ended India's winning start to the tournament.
India will next face Bangladesh on June 25 before taking on Australia on June 28. These two matches will play a major role in deciding the semi-finalists from Group A. India reached the Women's T20 World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and 2023, but failed to qualify in 2024.
