Canada fast bowler Jeremy Gordon expressed confidence in his team's ability to cause upsets against strong title contenders India and Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2024. Jeremy Gordon stated they can defeat India and Pakistan with disciplined performances in the batting, bowling, and fielding departments.
Canada recorded their first win in the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Friday, June 7. Canada registered a 12-run victory in a thrilling clash against Ireland. The Saad Bin Zafar-led team successfully defended the 137-run target to open their count in the table.
Jeremy Gordon redeemed himself after a challenging performance against the United States of America (USA) in the first match of the T20 World Cup 2024. The right-arm pacer picked up two wickets for just 16 runs in his four overs, including crucial dismissals of Ireland skipper Paul Stirling and Mark Adair.
It's To Do The Basics Right - Jeremy Gordon
In the post-match press conference, Jeremy Gordon emphasized the importance of sticking to the basics and maintaining discipline in the upcoming matches. Gordon acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by Pakistan and India but claimed that they can surprise with their disciplined performance.
"There's definitely a lot of confidence - so for us obviously, it's to do the basics right and to be disciplined," Gordon said.
"It's not for us to get ahead of ourselves - basically just obviously appreciate the win, but then just go back to the drawing board keep working our games because like I said, it's going to be Pakistan and India. Those are obviously two of the better teams in the world currently so for us, it's again ticking the box in terms of being disciplined in all three areas; batting, bowling, and fielding."
"I feel like if we do that, we might give a good account for ourselves in a day, and who knows what could happen," he added.
I've Done A Good Job So I'm Quite Happy - Jeremy Gordon
The 37-year-old bowler said that he was happy with his contribution to Canada's first-ever win in the T20 World Cup. Gordon stated that his 33-run over in the last match cost them the game, and added that he was pleased to make a comeback in the subsequent match.
"Honestly, I'm very happy obviously to contribute to the team's success because I personally felt my over is what kind of gave it away the last game, so for me to come back and help the team get over the line to me, I feel like I've done a good job so I'm quite happy," Gordon further stated.
Canada is in third place in the Group A table with two points and a net run rate (NRR) of -0.274. The Canada team will face Pakistan, led by Babar Azam, in their next match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 11. They will take on India in their final group match in Florida on June 15.
