Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are expected to retain their experienced core, including Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, MS Dhoni and Shivam Dube, ahead of the IPL 2027 auction. The five-time champions could also back several young players for the next season.

Notably, the deadline for IPL 2027 retention and release decisions is November 17, 2026. The official team-wise lists are expected around the time franchises submit their final decisions.

They finished eighth in IPL 2026, with six wins from 14 games. CSK missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season, following their last-place finish in 2025. MS Dhoni was absent throughout the campaign, Nathan Ellis also missed the season, and Ayush Mhatre and Khaleel Ahmed suffered injuries midway through it.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson Among Players CSK Likely to Retain for IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings are expected to retain their experienced core despite another disappointing campaign. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube remain important members of the squad. Fans will also hope to see MS Dhoni return after he did not feature in IPL 2026.

CSK are also likely to retain several of their bowling options. Khaleel Ahmed picked up an injury midway through the previous season, but he could remain part of the plans alongside Mukesh Choudhary and Noor Ahmad. Nathan Ellis, who missed the entire campaign, is another overseas player the franchise could retain.

Young players Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis are also expected to stay. Mhatre's campaign was cut short by injury, while domestic performers Anshul Kamboj, Akash Madhwal and Sarfaraz Khan could continue to strengthen the squad.

CSK could also retain Akeal Hosein, Matt Short, Gurjapneet Singh, Aman Khan, Jamie Overton, Ramakrishna Ghosh, Shreyas Gopal and Urvil Patel.

CSK's predicted retained players list: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, MS Dhoni, Shivam Dube, Noor Ahmad, Mukesh Choudhary, Anshul Kamboj, Khaleel Ahmed, Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, Akeal Hosein, Matt Short, Gurjapneet Singh, Aman Khan, Akash Madhwal, Jamie Overton, Nathan Ellis, Ramakrishna Ghosh, Sarfaraz Khan, Shreyas Gopal and Urvil Patel.

Rahul Chahar, Matt Henry Among Players CSK Could Release Ahead of IPL 2027 Auction

Chennai Super Kings could release several players ahead of the mini auction. Rahul Chahar, Matt Henry, Spencer Johnson and Zakary Foulkes are among the potential exits. Dian Forrester, Kuldip Yadav and Macneil Noronha are also among the potential exits.

Matthew Short is another player CSK could assess. Prashant Veer's first season did not produce the expected results, but his all-round potential and the significant investment the franchise made in him could persuade CSK to give him another opportunity.

CSK's predicted released players list: Prashant Veer, Kartik Sharma, Rahul Chahar, Matt Henry, Spencer Johnson, Zakary Foulkes, Dian Forrester, Kuldip Yadav and Macneil Noronha.

Why Chennai Super Kings Could Make Major Squad Changes Ahead of IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings enjoyed a successful start to the 2020s, winning their fourth and fifth IPL titles in 2021 and 2023. However, they have struggled to maintain that consistency over the past three seasons, with Ruturaj Gaikwad taking over as captain ahead of IPL 2024.

Their failure to reach the playoffs in each of those seasons has increased the need for a squad reassessment. The 2026 campaign exposed areas that need attention, particularly the bowling attack and overseas combination.

Injuries to Ayush Mhatre and Khaleel Ahmed affected the team's options, while the absence of Nathan Ellis meant CSK missed one of their specialist white-ball pacers throughout the season.

The management will also need to evaluate the value it is getting from its auction signings. Releasing players who have not delivered could free up salary-cap space and give Gaikwad a chance to build a more balanced playing XI for IPL 2027.
