Former New Zealand cricketer Chris Cairns has suffered paralysis in his legs after heart surgery. The 51-year-old will now undergo a rehabilitation process at a special spinal hospital in Australia. Cairns suffered a heart issue earlier this month. He was transferred to Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital in Australia for treatment.

Chris Cairns suffered an issue of aortic dissection. It is a condition in which a tear occurs in the inners layer of the heart’s aorta. A few days ago, after successful surgery, it was reported that Cairns is on life support. He was serious but stable and was able to communicate with his family.

Chris Cairns Has Suffered Paralysis In Legs, Reveals Former Cricketer’s Lawyer

Cairns’ lawyer Aaron Lloyd issued a statement in which he updated everyone about the 51-year-old’s present condition. Lloyd informed that during the emergency heart surgery, Cairns suffered a stroke in the spine which led to paralysis in his legs.

“During the life-saving emergency heart surgery Chris underwent in Sydney he suffered a stroke in his spine. This has resulted in paralysis in his legs. As a result, he will be undertaking a significant rehabilitation process at a specialist spinal hospital in Australia”, Lloyd said in a statement.

He also informed that the Cairns family appreciates the support given by the public and now wants to focus on spending time together.

“Chris and his family remain appreciative of the immense public support as they deal with this difficult time. They also appreciate the way in which their privacy has been respected. Chris and his family now want to focus on spending time together where possible and making whatever progress they can in his recovery. We will update everyone when there is more news, but that is likely to be some time away,” the statement further said.

Chris Cairns, who played for New Zealand from 1989 to 2006, was one of the best all-rounders of his time. He represented New Zealand in 62 Tests and 215 ODIs. He mustered 3320 runs and scalped 2018 in Tests. In his ODI career, he piled up 4950 runs while picking 201 wickets.
