While questions have arisen over Harmanpreet Kaur’s future with the Indian Women’s cricket team amid the ongoing 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup, Indian cricket legend Anjum Chopra observes a very energetic group of girls under the leadership of Kaur.
Anjum Chopra highlights that the entire Indian cricket dressing room is behind Harmanpreet Kaur, and they are enjoying playing with her as the captain.
Harmanpreet is a good leader: Anjum Chopra
While taking in a video for the news agency PTI, the former India cricketer said that without any second opinion, Harmanpreet Kaur is a good skipper and she commands great respect in the dressing room. Players also love to follow her command for the betterment of the team.
“Harmanpreet is a good leader. She commands great respect in that dressing room. She walks tall in the dressing room because of her own performances. The team backs her. She is the leader of that team. And when I say that she is the leader of the team, she leads them in whichever direction they need to be led,” Chopra said.
“And everyone happily follows her lead. She commands that kind of respect. And for any leader who commands that kind of respect, it is a great thing to happen.”
Why is Harmanpreet Kaur a respectable figure in the dressing room?
Chopra further mentions that Harmanpreet Kaur has earned respect through all the performances she has upheld across the formats over the years. Under his leadership, the Indian Women’s cricket team claimed the ODI title, and now they are on the hunt for the T20I trophy. Someone like Kaur in the dressing, who is a proven batter and a proven leader, provides extra strength and depth in the team.
“Or Harmanpreet, you know, she knows how to score runs. She knows how to lead this team. She is a World Cup winner. And we are very proud of her. India is very proud of her and her team. I just hope that success continues in that direction every day,” the former India captain opines.
Kaur inspires India to play like a unit
According to the situation and the demand of a match, Kaur often allows other batters to take strike first, which reflects on her dedication to the team. As the captain herself sets the standards inside the team, which are very high, it inspires the others to play at their best.
At the end of the day, the game called cricket is a team game, over an individual brilliance. Chopra says that with Harmanpreet Kaur as the captain, the Women in Blue know how to carry a team game.
“Whether you play a second fiddle or you lead them, at the end of the day, it's a team game. You know, you need two people on the crease to score runs. So, whether she is striking the ball or she is the non-striker, and at the end of the day, we saw that even in the game against Pakistan, Smriti was flourishing at the other end when Harman was there. When Harman started taking singles, ones-twos, Smriti was there. So, it's about teamwork,” Anjum Chopra says in the same video.
