The Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match between Mumbai and Jammu & Kashmir at the BKC Ground in Mumbai on Friday, January 24, witnessed a bizarre incident involving Ajinkya Rahane. The Mumbai captain was initially declared out and walked back to the dressing room before the on-field umpires called him back.
After dismissing Jammu & Kashmir's lower order quickly in the first session, Mumbai had a deficit of 86 runs. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal added 54 runs for the first wicket, but the Mumbai team suffered a collapse. The team collapsed to 86-5, putting the pressure on Rahane to steer them out of trouble.

The incident occurred during the 25th over of Mumbai's second innings on Day 2. Pacer Umar Nazir bowled a short delivery that cramped Ajinkya Rahane for room, and the batter gloved a catch to the keeper. Rahane walked back to the dressing room, and all-rounder Shardul Thakur came out to bat.
However, confusion ensued when the umpires began checking for a no-ball, but the footage was only available to the third umpire. Ajinkya Rahane was called back to the crease, sending Thakur back to the pavilion. The umpires later clarified that Rahane had been asked to wait, but he had not heard their instructions.
Take a look at the video of the incident below:
Ajinkya Rahane was given Out and he left ground and umpires called him back from dug out and Shardul was in the ground and sent back to the dressing room. Will Send the Relevant Footage to the BCCI - Nitin Goel
The live telecast did not show the no-ball, and the production team revealed they did not have access to the footage. Match referee and third umpire Nitin Goel attributed the delays to communication issues.
Nitin Goel revealed that he tried contacting the on-field umpire via walkie-talkie after Ajinkya Rahane's dismissal. Goel confirmed that it was a clear no-ball with no doubt about the decision and added that he would send the relevant footage to the BCCI.
"When I tried reaching out to the umpire on the walkie talkie, the umpire was on a different channel. So it took some time to communicate to the on-field umpire. Rahane himself appeared on the screen, indicating that he did not hear the umpires asking him to wait. It was a clear no ball and there was no doubt about it. I will send the relevant footage to the BCCI," Goel, a former Haryana batsman, said, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
What ICC Rules State About Umpires Recalling Batters
According to the laws of the game, "An umpire shall intervene if satisfied that a batter, not having been given out, has left the wicket under a misapprehension of being out. The umpire intervening shall call and signal Dead ball to prevent any further action by the fielding side and shall recall the batter.
"A batter may be recalled at any time up to the instant when the ball comes into play for the next delivery, unless it is the final wicket of the innings, in which case it should be up to the instant when the umpires leave the field."
