According to Code Sports, Beau Webster is under scrutiny after a poor series against Bangladesh. The all-rounder scored only 12, 5 and 0 across the two Tests and failed to take a wicket. That run has left his place vulnerable ahead of Australia’s three-match Test series in South Africa.
Beau Webster has been a reliable presence since breaking into Australia’s Test side, often helping the middle order recover from difficult situations. However, Cameron Green’s batting performances against Bangladesh have strengthened his position and reduced Australia’s need for another pace-bowling all-rounder.
The selectors also need to start preparing for a demanding period that includes Test series against India and England next year. Beau Webster has done his job by covering for Green during his difficult period, but he could be dropped after his recent struggles.
Cooper Connolly Emerges as the Favourite to Replace Beau Webster
Cooper Connolly has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Beau Webster. The former Australia Under-19 captain bats left-handed and bowls left-arm orthodox spin, giving the selectors a different combination in the lower middle order.
Connolly has already played for Australia across all three formats despite never scoring a first-class century. In 13 first-class matches, he has scored 800 runs at an average of 42.10, with nine fifties and a highest score of 90.
The 22-year-old also showed his ability to perform on the international stage when he smashed 149 off 133 balls against Bangladesh in Mirpur in June. Notably, the selectors clearly rate his potential despite his limited appearances in first-class cricket.
Australia Face Crucial South Africa Test Series in WTC 2025-27
Australia will tour South Africa for a three-Test series in September and October, with all three matches carrying World Test Championship 2025-27 points. The series will begin at Kingsmead in Durban on September 24.
Australia are currently at the top of the WTC standings, with eight wins and two defeats after 10 Tests. Their points percentage is around 80%, keeping them firmly in contention for the 2027 final. South Africa are also among the leading teams after winning three of their four Tests.
Winning in South Africa would strengthen their position and give them valuable away points before their remaining assignments against New Zealand and India. With only the top two teams reaching the 2027 final, Australia will want to avoid dropping points against another strong contender.
