Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg has opened up about the controversy surrounding Australian women’s vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner’s personal life. There were reports of an alleged relationship with national teammate Georgia Voll while married to her estranged wife, Monica Wright.

Monica Wright questioned Cricket Australia’s response to the situation. She also raised concerns about a potential power imbalance when a senior player or staff member becomes involved with a younger or less experienced teammate, calling for the matter to be addressed appropriately.

Todd Greenberg Addresses Ashleigh Gardner-Georgia Voll Controversy

Speaking on SEN radio during a recent broadcast, Todd Greenberg acknowledged that the situation is a private matter but added that Cricket Australia has workplace policies to handle sensitive issues within the national team.

"It is a very personal matter for the player, and I think there’s a level of respect that needs to go with that," the Cricket Australia CEO said.

"Cricket’s got very strong respect-at-work policies, so we’ve got a policy that’s been developed over time that can deal with these sorts of things."

Cricket Australia is also putting additional safeguards in place to avoid any potential conflict of interest within the national team. Gardner is the Australian vice-captain alongside Tahlia McGrath.

Cricket Australia Introduces Selection Guardrails for Ashleigh Gardner

Todd Greenberg also clarified that the situation did not influence Cricket Australia's decision to appoint Sophie Molineux as captain ahead of Ashleigh Gardner earlier this year. He said that leadership decisions are handled separately from players' private matters.

"Ash is a highly regarded leader in our system. The CA board make leadership decisions and have oversight over all leadership decisions. Ash is our vice-captain for a reason, because she’s highly regarded, but what we will do is in situations where there are personal relationships, is make sure there are additional guardrails, so the perception of conflict or conflict itself, talking about things like selection, are handled appropriately and respectfully."

"We’ve got policies in place but we will put additional ones in place given Ash is now vice-captain. If there are relationships that have been disclosed and they have been, then we will make sure that conflict – perceived or real – around selections are removed, so Ash is not involved in those things."

"It was new news in the media, but for those that were in the team and leading the team, we’ve been well across this for a period of time."

Ashleigh Gardner Remains a Key Figure in Australian Cricket

Ashleigh Gardner is currently leading the Trent Rockets during The Hundred in England. The Trent Rockets finished the league stage at the top of the standings with 28 points from eight matches. They won seven games and lost only once to secure a place in the final at Lord's on August 16.

Meanwhile, Monica Wright recently spoke publicly about the breakdown of her seven-month marriage to Gardner. The pair began dating in 2020, became engaged in April 2024, and married in the Blue Mountains in April 2025.

According to reports, their relationship broke down during Australia's 2025 World Cup campaign in India and ended shortly after the tournament. Australia topped the league stage with 13 points from seven matches, winning six games and suffering one washout.

Australia's campaign ended with a five-wicket semi-final defeat against India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, on October 30, 2025. India later won the title after defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on November 5.
