The Olympic Games might have had a great legacy, but for many cricket fans, the legacy has now been revived with the reintroduction of cricket as an event. The decision was made that cricket will be played as an Olympic event from the upcoming edition of the Olympics in LA28.
The gentleman's game, which now has widespread fans around the world, has been included in the biggest sporting event, the Olympics, after 128 years. It was played in the second Summer Olympic Games, which dates back to 1900. The only gold back then was won by Great Britain over France.
Schedule of LA28 for Cricket announced
The schedule for the cricket matches to be played in the LA28 Olympic Games has been announced. The schedule was announced yesterday on the 14th of July, exactly three years before the events.
The Olympic Games have been scheduled from the 14th of July 2028 and will continue till the 30th of July. Cricket games have been scheduled to begin two days before the beginning of the Olympic events; hence, the organizers are citing this as 'minus 2.'
The first set of matches is to be played from the 12th to the 18th of July, while these will be followed by the medal matches to be played on the 19th of July. The next set of games is to run from the 22nd to the 28th of July, with the final scheduled on the 29th.
Teams and Venue of Cricket in the LA28 Olympics
This has made it clear that out of the several teams that are enlisted under the International Cricket Council, they will have to go through a long qualification process, as only 6 teams are supposed to make it to the big stage.
Both the men's and women's segments will have 6 nations as participating teams each. However, though it is presumed that men's matches will be followed by women's matches, no clear idea of that has been given by the organizers yet.
"The gender sequence for events in the 2028 Games is not yet available. As stated in today's release, 'A more detailed schedule with medal events and gender order will be released later this year,' said LA28 when asked for clarification, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
The venue of the event has been long announced as the Fairgrounds Cricket Stadium in Pomona, somewhere within 50 km of Los Angeles, which will be used for all these matches.
Qualification process for LA28 to be decided at the annual conference
The ICC is supposed to have talks related to the process of qualification process for the teams to make it to the LA28 games. The decision is likely to be talked over in the annual conference of the ICC, which is to be held from the 17th to the 20th of July.
It has been anticipated that the identification of teams will be based on ICC rankings; however, the thought of a qualifying tournament cannot be ruled out as well.
