Cricket South Africa (CSA) has recalled its centrally contracted players from the English County Championship ahead of the home summer. The decision from the cricket board will affect several county teams, which will now need to find overseas replacements for the final rounds of the competition.
South Africa’s home summer will begin with a three-match Test series against Australia on October 9, followed by fixtures against Bangladesh and England. Australia will tour South Africa for their first red-ball series there since 2018. The Proteas are also preparing for the new WTC cycle under Temba Bavuma.
CSA Recall Leaves County Sides Without South African Stars
David Bedingham at Durham, Simon Harmer at Essex and Kyle Verreynne at Nottinghamshire will be unavailable for the final three rounds of the County Championship. Their withdrawals have forced the clubs to look for overseas replacements at a crucial stage of the season.
Nottinghamshire have signed New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Mitch Hay. The Division One side are looking to secure back-to-back titles and will hope Hay can fill the gap left by Verreynne during the final fixtures.
Durham have also strengthened their squad after signing Indian batter Mayank Agarwal to replace Bedingham. The club are leading Division Two and pushing for the title, making his absence a significant blow.
Essex, meanwhile, confirmed that Harmer will miss their Headingley fixture this week. The club are already dealing with an availability crisis, with Sam Cook and Jordan Cox on Test duty, while Charlie Bennett, Noah Thain, MacKenzie Jones and Simon Fernandes are sidelined with injuries.
Worcestershire Sign Usama Mir After Beyers Swanepoel Exit
Worcestershire have confirmed that all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel will miss the rest of the season after returning home to attend to matters related to his domestic cricket commitments. The South African had been part of the club's plans for the final three Championship matches.
Swanepoel recently faced disciplinary action from CSA following his unusual walk-out during a domestic 50-over final. His contract with the Lions franchise was later terminated, and Worcestershire have brought in Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir as his replacement for the final three games.
Gloucestershire have signed Barbados-born fast bowler Che Simmons from Warwickshire on loan. The youngster will join Gloucestershire ahead of a permanent move as the county side strengthens their squad for the final stage of the season.
Australia Test Series Set to Begin South Africa’s Home Summer
South Africa’s home summer will begin with a three-match Test series against Australia from October 9. The series will be part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle and will mark Australia’s first Test tour of South Africa since their controversial 2018 series.
Cricket Australia have named a 16-player squad for the tour, with Marnus Labuschagne retaining his place despite his recent struggles for form. Cooper Connolly, Matthew Kuhnemann and Michael Neser have also been added to strengthen Australia’s options in South African conditions.
The two teams will first meet in a three-match ODI series in late September before moving into the Test format. The Test series will also be important for the WTC standings, with Australia currently leading the table and South Africa in second place.
