CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad insecure about Sanju Samson: Ex-cricketers make big claim amid IPL 2026
Former English cricketer Michael Vaughan, alongside New Zealand seamer Simon Doull, has sparked a huge debate on the dynamics between the two CSK openers. The former cricketers declared that the two partners feel threatened by each other's presence, a factor that has prevented them from committing entirely to their innings.
The Chennai Super Kings' opening pair, comprising captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and seasoned batter Sanju Samson, has failed to fire in the first two games of the season. CSK revamped their squad and looked to build a core under Gaikwad's leadership. However, early signs have been seriously ineffective.
MS Dhoni, the legendary wicketkeeper, has neared the end of his illustrious career, and hence, Sanju Samson was traded in from the Rajasthan Royals. Samson showed sheer form in India's victorious campaign in the T20 World Cup, but has failed to fire in the first two matches.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is intimidated in the presence of Sanju Samson - Michael Vaughan
Adding a massive layer to Gaikwad's lack of form, questions have been raised over his equation with the new opener, Sanju Samson. The former English legend Michael Vaughan has weighed in on the same.
“What about the captain, Gaikwad? Do you think he feels threatened [by Samson]?" Vaughan asked Doull.
“Absolutely," the ex-New Zealand seamer replied.
Vaughan simply pointed out the insecurity for Gaikwad within the CSK camp, noting that Sanju Samson's arrival might have threatened his position as the captain of the side, though the team management has backed him in the role.
“So that’s another kind of dynamic that you’re looking at," Vaughan added. “[One of the league’s] youngest captains, Gaikwad, he’s done it a bit now and you kind of go, ‘Go on, we’re going to back you; you’re the captain. But by the way, we’re signing Sanju, who’s a very good captain, and he’s a keeper.
"And guess what? We’ve had a keeper who was a captain for a long period of time and did very well, and we’re going to try and replace him. But you carry on captaining and hope it doesn’t affect you," he added.
Simon Doull points out the enormous pressure on Sanju Samson
Doul then went on to add that Sanju Samson's trade was a massive exchange between the two sides. As a result of it, CSK lost two very good cricketers to get their hands on Samson; hence, the expectations around him have heightened.
“Tough challenge for him, and it’s one of those situations you find yourself in when you’re not desperate, but when you want to play for a certain side, and you want to put on a show," Doull said before Friday’s match against Punjab Kings.
“I mean, he is a South boy, isn’t he? He is a Kerala boy. He wants to put on a show. I think he feels like he’s more at home. In the South, the trade happened; it was a big trade, as we’ve talked about, you’ve lost 2 high-quality players for one player.
"So the pressure’s quite enormous, the pressure of maybe what they see him as in the future as well. But he just got to think back to a few weeks ago, doesn’t he? And how was he playing in the last 3 games [in the T20 World Cup]," he added.
Should CSK try a different opening combination in IPL 2026?
CSK has surely not had the desired results after opening with the likely combination of Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad. The two legendary batters in the IPL came in with good form, but seemingly, the pair are flawed, as they have failed to share a chemistry between them.
CSK might try Ayush Mhatre as a probable opener alongside Sanju Samson, which could be a step to take the pressure off Sanju Samson. Gaikwad, who has formerly played in the first-down position, can be slotted in the role.
