IPL 2025 was the centre of a lot of big moments in the history of the league, and one of those was the elimination of Chennai Super Kings from the league stage itself for the second consecutive season. In this article, we will decode what really went wrong for them.
CSK Squad Rating for IPL 2025: 7/10
Chennai Super Kings, one of the most successful IPL teams, along with MI, finished at the bottom of the points table, something which is hard to believe given the legacy that the team has built.
According to the experts, it all started at the auction table when CSK failed to identify the changing nature of T20 cricket and invested in expierence rather than youth.
Along with it, CSK also took a very timid approach in the first six overs by following the strategy of keeping wickets in hand.
The approach backfired badly and received heavy criticism, which prompted CSK's captain Dhoni, who replaced Ruturaj Gaikwad mid-season, and the management to rope in some mid-season signings.
As a result, Ayush Mhatre, Urvil Patel, and Dewald Brevis were brought into the team, which turned things around for Chennai Super Kings, but a bit too late.
Having said that, the performance of the young trio along with the expierence of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube paints a positive picture for the five-time champions going into the next season.
One of the biggest questions for CSK would be the availability of MS Dhoni for the next season.
The former Indian captain said after the last match against GT that he is yet to make a call on his future, but the fans would hope for him to play one more season.
Another question that Chennai Super Kings needs to answer is what the role of Ravindra Jadeja exactly is?
The all-rounder batter at number six in the first half of the tournament was promoted to bat at number four in the last few matches, but failed to play with an attacking intent throughout the season.
Jadeja might have a season or two left in him, but he needs to contribute with both bat and ball, taking into account that he is now one of the senior members of the team.
Highest Run Scorers
Player | Matches | Runs | Strike Rate | 6s |
Shivam Dube | 14 | 357 | 132.22 | 21 |
Ravindra Jadeja | 14 | 301 | 135.58 | 10 |
Ayush Mhatre | 7 | 240 | 188.97 | 11 |
The performance of CSK's bowling lineup was no different as the likes of Matheesha Pathirana, Ravindra Jadeja, and Khaleel Ahmed leaked plenty of runs.
The only shining light for CSK amid a disappointing bowling performance was Noor Ahmad, who picked up 24 wickets in 14 matches.
Noor battled like a lone warrior, and experienced bowlers like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja failed to support him from the other end.
Highest Wicket Takers

Noor Ahmad | 14 | 24 | 8.16 | 0 |
Khaleel Ahmed | 14 | 15 | 9.57 | 0 |
Matheesha Pathirana | 12 | 13 | 10.13 | 0 |
