Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Dewald Brevis was involved in a controversial LBW decision during the IPL 2025 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). After the match, CSK coach Stephen Fleming said that Brevis and Ravindra Jadeja were distracted by the ball’s deflection toward the boundary.

CSK seemed on track to chase down the 214-run target against RCB in Bengaluru on Saturday, May 3. Ayush Mhatre and Ravindra Jadeja added a 114-run partnership for the third wicket. However, RCB regained control by dismissing Mhatre, who scored 94 from just 48 deliveries with nine fours and five sixes.

Dewald Brevis Dismissed for Golden Duck Amid Review Confusion

The incident took place in the 17th over of CSK’s run chase. Dewald Brevis missed a full toss from Lungi Ngidi. The delivery struck him on the pads, and umpire Nitin Menon gave him out. However, Brevis and Ravindra Jadeja focused on completing a second run after a direct hit at the non-striker’s end.

Both batters appeared unaware that the 15-second window to signal for a review had started. They turned their attention to the appeal, but the deadline had already passed. The CSK batter was informed by the umpires that it was too late to challenge the decision and had to walk off without scoring.

HawkEye later revealed that the delivery would have clearly missed the stumps. Brevis would have survived had a review been taken in time. It proved costly for CSK, especially during such a crucial phase of their chase.

I Don't Know the Answer to That - Stephen Fleming on Dewald Brevis' Dismissal

Stephen Fleming stated that Dewald Brevis and Ravindra Jadeja were focused on running, adding that they missed the chance to take the review in time. Fleming said that Brevis seemed uncertain due to the circumstances surrounding the play.

"Yeah, it was a big moment. In talking to Jaddu and Brevis, there was a lot going on with running straight away. I think they saw the ball ricochet and actually went to the boundary for four. And lost in that was whether Brevis took the review in time. I don't know the answer to that. He wasn't sure, given that they were running at the time," said Stephen Fleming after the match.

It Certainly Wouldn't Have Given Us the Five Runs - Stephen Fleming

Stephen Fleming said even if the review had been successful, it wouldn't have resulted in any runs. He highlighted that it was a critical moment in an important game, full of twists and turns.

"As soon as you're given out, I understand the timer starts. There was a fair bit eaten up with the play still being completed, and whether they just ran out of time... in the umpire's view, it did."

"The other part about it, because he was given out, we wouldn't have got the runs. While we would have maintained the wicket, it certainly wouldn't have given us the five runs, which would have been nice. But it's a big moment in a big game. There was twists and turns all the way through," Fleming added.
