Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have set their sights on the Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar as a prime target for the next season ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. The Chennai Super Kings are reportedly looking to rebuild their all-round department, and MS Dhoni is personally involved in the discussions about the kind of player he wants in the squad.
MS Dhoni is one of the most successful and decorated captains in the world, and he led CSK to five titles in the world’s biggest T20 league. As the retention date for November 15 approaches, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter is once again spearheading the team's strategy.
MS Dhoni targets Washington Sundar as CSK’s next big all-round star for IPL 2026
Dhoni, who is known for his calm temperament, tactical acumen, and sharp cricketing mind, is reportedly keen on bringing in a tall off-spinner who can contribute equally with the bat, meaning a genuine all-rounder just like Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya.

The idea is to have a player who doesn’t need to be used as an impact substitute but can play a full role in both departments. Washington Sundar, with his calm temperament, consistent bowling, and ability to handle pressure situations, fits perfectly in Dhoni’s criteria.
CSK’s backup plan revealed if the Washington Sundar deal fails
However, the Chennai Super Kings think tank is also exploring other options. If Sundar’s deal doesn’t go through, the five-time champions could turn their attention to Cameron Green, who has already proven his worth in Indian conditions and will be one of the hot properties at the IPL 2026 auction.
The Australian all-rounder was part of the RCB in the last season, but their purse might not allow them to retain him, and once Green goes to the auction, he would certainly be unreachable for them. It is being said that a lot of teams are desperate to have Cameron Green on their side, including CSK.
As a backup plan, young Tasmanian all-rounder Mitchell Owen is also being discussed as a potential signing in the CSK camp, given his growing reputation as a dependable seam-bowling all-rounder. Owen, who is a middle-order batter and seamer, has already played 14 international games for Australia. However, Owen got only one game with Punjab Kings last year.

A journalist, Rohit Juglan, revealed in his latest YouTube video that Washington Sundar is on CSK's target list. MS Dhoni wants a player who can bowl, a tall off-spinner who can bat. He wants someone who can be a proper all-rounder like Hardik Pandya, who doesn't have to be an impact player.
Dhoni always wants to have an off-spinner in the side, and Sundar perfectly fits. It could be Cameron Green, and if they don’t get him, then Mitchell Owen can be a substitute.
Washington Sundar's career in stats
Notably, Sundar is one of the most impactful players in the IPL, having played 66 games so far in the league for 4 teams, including the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Titans.
In the last season, Sundar managed only 2 wickets and 133 runs in 6 games for the Titans under Shubman Gill’s captaincy.
The Chennai-born all-rounder has amassed 511 runs and 39 wickets in the IPL so far. Sundar has also played nearly 100 matches for India, taking over 110 wickets and scoring almost 1300 runs.
