Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn gave his opinion on whether current pace attack leader Kagiso Rabada will break his record of 439 Test wickets and end up and the highest Test wicket-taker for the rainbow nation.

26-year-old Kagiso Rabada had taken the world by storm since his debut in 2015 and thus far has 213 wickets in 47 Tests with the best of 7/112, has 126 wickets in 81 ODIs, with a best of 6/16, and also had picked 39 wickets in 32 T20Is with a best of 3/30.

Rabada is currently on the 8th spot in the highest Test wicket-takers for South Africa with Steyn at no.1 with 439 scalps, Shaun Pollock at no.2 with 421 scalps and then Makhaya Ntini (390), Allan Donald (330), and Morne Morkel (309) completing the top five.

I Think He Will: Dale Steyn On Kagiso Rabada Becoming The Highest Test Wicket-Taker For South Africa

Dale Steyn had announced his retirement from all forms of the game a few days ago. He played his last international fixture in February 2020. The former number one seamer could have had a lot more if not for his recurrent injuries.

Steyn was confident in Rabada’s skills to pick heaps of wickets for South Africa but had his doubts about how many Tests South Africa will get to play, given the COVID-19 situation.

“I think he will. More importantly, will South Africa, after Covid, play as many Test matches as we used to and allow him to get there? He probably will anyway, but if we do play a similar number of Tests then he definitely – fitness permitting,” Steyn told in an interview with RNS Global Advisory.

“He’s just a phenomenal athlete and a wicket-taking machine. So if Test cricket maintains its status and T20 cricket doesn’t continue its march to take over the calendar, then he will definitely take the record. There’s no question in my mind,” he added.

Kagiso Rabada has been at the top of ICC Test bowlers rankings previously and is widely regarded as one of the best bowlers in the world at the moment. He last played a Test against West Indies at Gros Islet in 2021. And currently has picked 4 wickets in two ODI against Sri Lanka in the ongoing series.
