The Sussex County Cricket Club all-rounder Danny Lamb’s journey has come to a heartbreaking end. Danny Lamb has been forced to retire from professional cricket at the age of just 30 after doctors advised him to stop playing because of a serious neck and spinal injury.
The former Lancashire all-rounder suffered a disc problem in his neck while playing earlier this season. The injury affected his spinal cord, making the situation much more serious. Danny Lamb takes painful retirement call following spinal cord injury
Danny Lamb admitted that retirement was an “incredibly difficult” decision, but he knows it is the right step for his long-term health. He was in the final year of his three-year deal with the Sussex County Cricket Club after joining the side from Lancashire.
Lamb said in a statement on Sussex County Cricket Club’s official website: “It is incredibly difficult to have my career end through injury, but, after taking medical advice, I know it is the right decision for my long-term health. It has been a privilege to spend over a decade in the professional game. I am extremely grateful to have represented both Lancashire and Sussex.”
He added, “I was never the most naturally gifted player, but I always tried to give everything for the team and do whatever was required to help us win. I have been fortunate to experience some incredible moments that will stay with me forever… as well as the more personal highlights of sharing dressing rooms with outstanding teammates and building lifelong friendships.”

Meanwhile, Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace said Danny Lamb’s retirement is a very sad moment, especially because he has been forced to stop playing due to injury. The director of cricket praised Lamb for his hard work, commitment and cricket skills during his time at Sussex.
The head coach also thanked Lamb for his important contribution to Sussex’s promotion to Division One of the County Championship and their run to the T20 Blast Finals Day. Amid this, Sam Curran set to miss ILT20 as England eye him to replace Ben Stokes.
Paul Farbrace stated: “It is always a sad day when any professional athlete has to retire from the sport they love. It's even harder when it is because of injury. Danny leaves Hove with our very best wishes and thanks for his commitment to the club on and off the field and will, of course, be most welcome back at all times."
Danny Lamb's inspiring journey and impressive numbers
Lamb, who was born in Lancashire's Preston, came through the Lancashire Academy and made history in 2018 as England’s first-ever first-class concussion replacement, replacing Joe Mennie. He played for Lancashire, with loan spells at Gloucestershire and Somerset, before joining Sussex in 2024.
The star all-rounder, who is the brother of England Women’s player Emma Lamb, helped Sussex earn County Championship Division One promotion. The right-handed batter played 38 First-Class, 34 List A and 82 T20 matches, scoring 4232, 923 and 1258 runs, respectively. He took 208 First-Class, 45 List A and 60 T20 wickets, including five five-wicket hauls in each format.
