The fans are set to enjoy yet another T20 competition in the country as the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) is likely to get its own premier league.
DDCA has already forwarded a request to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for conducting a T20 competition at the state level for both men and women. The proposal of conducting the league was passed at the DDCA's recent Apex Council meeting. The DDCA will start working on the Delhi Premier League once it gets the green light from the board.
"DDCA has sent the request to BCCI to conduct the Delhi Premier League. We will go ahead once the board (BCCI) approves it," DDCA Joint Secretary Rajan Manchanda told News18 CricketNext.
"The request also includes the permission to start the women’s league. Most likely there would be eight & six teams and apart from this we will also have the auctions," Manchanda added.
The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is also set to start its own T20 league for both men and women this year. The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) already has a very successful league for men and is working on starting one for women as well. Several other states such as Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Baroda, Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and UP have their T20 leagues too.
Delhi has a very robust club culture but the authorities believe that having a proper competition will help them find more talent. DDCA will be desperate to find some big talents who can turn things around for Delhi in the domestic arena. Delhi have struggled to do well in domestic competitions in recent times and things have shown very little signs of improvement.
They have not won the Ranji Trophy since the 2007-08 season while their last triumphant campaign in the Vijay Hazare Trophy came in the 2012-13 season. As far as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is concerned, they last won it in the 2017-18 season.
DDCA takes measures for the betterment of Delhi cricket:
The report further stated that DDCA president Rohan Jaitley has been pushing for multiple cricketing reforms in the state during the off-season. The DDCA is currently conducting high-performance camps for both men’s and women’s players.
Delhi's senior players are also participating in quality tournaments after a disappointing campaign in the last domestic season. The DDCA team recently topped the group stage in the All India Gold Cup tournament in Dehradun, and have qualified for the knockout stages.
