South Africa's young and promising middle-order batter Dewald Brevis earned a name in modern-day sport after he played some monumental knocks in various franchise-level domestic tournaments across the globe.

The youngster who went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega-auction was later called in the final stages of the tournament by the Chennai Super Kings. He showed a masterclass of T20 batting coming down the order for CSK, but now has to undergo yet another low in his career as he is released by MI Cape Town ahead of the upcoming season of SA20.

In South Africa, he holds the record for the highest ever T20 score and the record for the fastest 150 in the history of T20 cricket in the world. He came to the limelight after participating in the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he broke Shikhar Dhawan's long-standing record of most runs in a single edition of the U-19 World Cup.

Dewald Brevis released by MI Cape Town ahead of next season in SA20

Dewald Brevis is a 22-year-old dynamic batter who is known for scoring runs fluently with the bat. He played for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL from 2022 to 2024 and the MI Cape Town from 2023 onwards in the SA20 league.

He was also a part of MI New York in MLC 2023; however, as per reports, the SA20 defending champions, MI Cape Town, are all set to release the master batter from the team. He has not been named under their 3 local player allocations; however, there still remains a probability that he might be bought back in the auction.

Dewald Brevis had a standout season for CSK

Dewald Brevis had one of the most convincing seasons in the SA20 in the last season in 2025, when MI Cape Town won the SA20 title for the first time in three years. Among all three seasons played, this was his best season from the batting point of view.

He played 12 matches for the MI Cape Town side while he batted stunningly, having scored 291 runs at a new batting position and scored at an average of 48.50. From the batting point of view, this was a highly successful season with a strike rate of 180+ and 2 fifties to his name.

Next in the IPL season, where he joined the CSK unit late after being released by the Mumbai Indians, he had a remarkable show towards the back end of the innings. It was due to his cameos that CSK got to respectable totals on several occasions.

He played only 6 games for the Men in Yellow and scored 225 runs, coming in to bat mostly at no. 6, with an average of 37.50 and a huge strike rate of 180. His two fifties were also of great value to CSK, as the Kings found a supreme talent despite not having had desirable outcomes in the season.

After promising franchise stint, Young Brevis makes Test debut for the Proteas

After putting on some stunning shows at franchise-level cricket for MI Cape Town, the Chennai Super Kings, and Hampshire on debut in England, Brevis was immediately called up by the national side for the Test series against Zimbabwe.

The series might not be a part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle; however, it provided the opportunity for several players in the young Proteas side to unleash their commanding side.

Dewald Brevis made his debut against Zimbabwe on the 28th of June, and in 2 games he has 84 runs with the highest score of 51 and a wicket as well.
