South African young batter Dewald Brevis was reportedly approached by Delhi Capitals (DC) as a potential replacement for Harry Brook during IPL 2025. However, Brevis rejected the deal before joining the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) midway through the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.
Harry Brook missed a second consecutive season after opting out of IPL 2025 due to personal reasons. The England batter was picked by Delhi Capitals for ₹6.25 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction. DC signed Afghanistan's Sediqullah Atal as Brook’s replacement when just three league matches were left.
Dewald Brevis Approached by Delhi Capitals as Replacement for Harry Brook
According to Chadwick Drive Substack, Dewald Brevis was approached by the Delhi Capitals as a replacement for Harry Brook during IPL 2025. However, Brevis declined the offer after learning that the franchise couldn't assure him regular playing time.
Brevis had planned to spend time with Hampshire, participating in the T20 Blast, County Championship, and the One-Day Cup. When contacted by IPL teams, his primary concern was whether he’d be assured time in actual matches rather than just training.
Brevis felt that while the IPL offers valuable learning opportunities from top coaches and players, those lessons truly deliver when tested in real match situations, not just in the nets. It was learned that game time was non-negotiable.
Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni Happy to Guarantee Dewald Brevis a Spot in the Playing XI
Dewald Brevis turned down an IPL offer after the Delhi franchise couldn’t promise him a place in the playing XI. A few weeks later, Chennai Super Kings approached with a very different proposal. Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni were willing to guarantee Brevis a regular place in their lineup.
The South African youngster had been in excellent form across formats, including the SA20, domestic one-day, and four-day cricket.
Brevis went unsold during the IPL 2025 mega auction. He was instrumental in MI Cape Town’s success in the SA20 2025 tournament, where he helped the team secure their maiden championship. Brevis amassed 291 runs with an impressive average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 184.
Dewald Brevis Might Be Retained by Chennai Super Kings for IPL 2026
In his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings, Dewald Brevis scored 42 off 24 balls before being dismissed by a stunning catch from Kamindu Mendis. He passed 30 runs five times out of six matches, including two half-centuries.
Brevis provided vital momentum in the middle overs and helped set up big totals. He had a rare failure with a duck against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), but bounced back with important knocks of 42 and 57 against Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Gujarat Titans (GT).
His fearless and aggressive approach gave CSK much-needed firepower, and his contributions could have changed their fortunes in the tournament had he come earlier. Brevis could be retained by the Super Kings for the next edition.
