South Africa cricketer Dewald Brevis dropped West Indies skipper Shai Hope’s catch during the Super 8 match of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The match between South Africa and the West Indies is being played at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday, February 26.
South Africa skipper Aiden Markram won the toss and opted to bowl first in their second Super 8 match. They fielded the same playing XI from the match against India, where they secured a victory. Meanwhile, the West Indies made one change to their playing XI, with Roston Chase replacing Akeal Hosein.
Shai Hope Survives Early After Dewald Brevis Drops Catch
Shai Hope got a lucky break early in the innings. Keshav Maharaj bowled short, and Hope went back to play the pull shot on the final ball of the first over. The shot did not come off well, but the ball went high towards deep mid-wicket.
Dewald Brevis ran to his left and took the catch near the boundary. However, he was moving backwards and could not keep his balance. He fell onto the ropes and failed to push the ball back into play, which turned the catch into six runs.

Hope survived and continued his innings after the boundary. However, the miss did not cost South Africa much in the end. Kagiso Rabada dismissed Hope for 16 in the third over when Hope edged a delivery outside off stump. Quinton de Kock took a simple catch behind the stumps.
South Africa Pace Attack Triggers West Indies Collapse
The West Indies scored 29 runs in the first two overs. The momentum shifted quickly after Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi came into the attack. South Africa’s fast bowlers ran through the top order by taking four wickets for 14 runs in the next 12 balls, leaving the Windies in trouble at 43/4.
Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer, Brandon King, and Roston Chase were all dismissed during the collapse. Hetmyer chipped his first delivery into the air, but Corbin Bosch leapt inside the circle and failed to hold the catch, giving him a brief lifeline.
However, two balls later, Rabada struck again as Hetmyer mistimed a pull shot. Keshav Maharaj moved to his right at mid-wicket and took a clean catch, sending Hetmyer back for 2 and sealing another key breakthrough for South Africa.
West Indies vs South Africa Playing XIs
"Well, we’ve seen two games here already. One team posted 187 during an 11:00 AM start, while New Zealand finished with 175 in the night game. For me, I’d want to bat first, get the runs on the board, and hope the surface crumbles slightly to give the bowlers more to work with later on," Shaun Pollock said at the pitch report.
South Africa Playing XI: Aiden Markram (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Ryan Rickelton, Dewald Brevis, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Keshav Maharaj.
West Indies Playing XI: Brandon King, Shai Hope (c & wk), Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Roston Chase, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Jason Holder, Matthew Forde, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph
