Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Subhranshu Senapati opened up on the worst fears of an injury in the initial phase of his domestic career.

Senapati, 25, has played 95 domestic games for Odisha – 37 first-class, 32 List A, and 26 T20 games in a span of more than five years.

The doctors had told me ‘you can’t play cricket because of this injury: Subhranshu Senapati

The Odisha player went down memory lane to share about his endurance with a wrist injury, which had almost ended his hopes of playing cricket.

It was the 2014-15 season, I was in the U19 days. Two days prior to the zonal camp, I got injured while preparing and training for the camp. I did not know the depth of the injury then and went to the camp. I tried practicing but I couldn’t do it. I had injured my wrist. The physios tried to treat my injury but it didn’t work,” Senapati said in a video posted on CSK’s social media platforms.

Upon getting an X-ray done, I realised it was a fracture. I consulted the best surgeon we had in my local area, and he said surgery is the only option. I had the surgery, and I couldn’t play cricket for a year. The doctors had told me ‘you can’t play cricket because of this injury’,” he added.

Senapathi also mentioned how he fought back after the surgery and trained the hard yards to regain fitness.

Usually, everybody got kits and spikes during zonal camps. As I didn’t join the camp, I didn’t get the kits. And then, I received a pair of spikes from the camp. At that moment, I realised that I will get better soon and start playing again. The arrival of the new pair of spikes motivated me even more to come back and practice harder,” Senapati said.

Senapati was bought by CSK for his base price of INR 20 lakhs in the IPL 2022 auction but didn’t feature in a single game for the four-time IPL champions this year.

Senapati didn’t fair well for Odisha in the Ranji Trophy 2022 group stage fixtures, scoring just 80 runs in six innings. Odisha bowed out in the Elite Group D after losing their games against Mumbai and Saurashtra.
