Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali heaped praise on IPL debutant Vaibhav Suryavanshi following his impressive knock against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Basit stated that the Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener, who hit a six on his very first ball in his IPL career, would have been dropped from the squad in Pakistan.
Suryavanshi became the youngest player to debut in the Indian Premier League at just 14 years and 23 days old. He was included as an impact player during the 181-run chase in Jaipur. Suryavanshi hit a six off the first ball he faced from Shardul Thakur and went on to score 34 runs off 20 balls in his innings.
Basit Ali Lauds Vaibhav Suryavanshi for His Aggressive Approach
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Basit Ali stated that Vaibhav Suryavanshi's boldness might not be encouraged in Pakistan, where a failed attempt could have led to criticism and even exclusion. Basit stated that backing young talent and building their confidence pays dividends in the long run.
“The 14-year-old kid, Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The way he smashed that first ball for six, it’s a huge deal. Imagine what would have happened had he gotten out trying to hit the first ball for six? What would people have said? In Pakistan, people would have said, throw him out. But this is how confidence is given, which later pays off,” Basit said while speaking on his YouTube channel.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Becomes the Youngest Player to Debut in IPL History
The left-handed batter scored 34 runs against LSG before being stumped by Rishabh Pant off Aiden Markram’s bowling. The youngster was seen in tears as he walked back to the dugout.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi was signed by Rajasthan Royals for ₹1.10 crore during the 2025 IPL auction in Saudi Arabia. He surpassed the previous record held by Prayas Ray Barman, who debuted at 16 in 2022.
Before his IPL debut, Suryavanshi had already impressed at the U-19 level, scoring 176 runs at an average of 44 in the 2023 U-19 Asia Cup.
Rajasthan Royals have had a rough season so far, with only two wins in eight matches. They will next face Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 24.
When I Call IPL No. 1, My Pakistan Brothers Feel Bad - Basit Ali
Basit Ali stated that the Indian Premier League is the best in the world, given the depth of talent. He added that this might not sit well with some in Pakistan, but added that the level of skill and young talent in the IPL is undeniable.
“The class of IPL – when I call it No. 1, my Pakistan brothers feel bad. But all they do is waste their hands and time. Look at the immense pool of talent, this season alone. Nehal Wadhera, Priyansh Arya, Abdul Samad, Ashwani Kumar. I want to see Mayank Yadav in particular and I am eagerly waiting for him to be match fit. I really want to see his bowling,” added Ali.
