England Men's Cricket Director Rob Key has revealed why Joe Root was chosen as England's interim Test captain ahead of vice-captain Harry Brook. Regular skipper Ben Stokes has been dropped for the upcoming Test, with the management opting for Root's experience during a challenging period for the team.
England will take on New Zealand in the second Test of the three-match series at the Kennington Oval in London, starting on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, with England looking to extend their 1-0 lead after winning the opening Test at Lord's. Gus Atkinson has also been dropped from the squad following the ongoing investigation.

Speaking at the Oval on Thursday, Rob Key said that England chose Joe Root as interim Test captain instead of vice-captain Harry Brook. He said that the current situation required an experienced leader, and the management felt Root was the best person to guide the team through a difficult period.
"We just thought this was too big a job at this stage for Harry to take on," Key said. "Ultimately, when English cricket's in a hole, Joe Root is the man that we ask to dig us out of it."
"Whether that's on the field or off the field. We're incredibly lucky to have him. And when I spoke to him about whether he would consider this, he didn't hesitate."
We Don't Want to Burden Him With That - Rob Key on Harry Brook Missing Out on Captaincy
Rob Key said that England decided against appointing Harry Brook as interim Test captain because the batter already has several responsibilities. Key added that the management did not want to add more pressure to Brook.
"There's lots of [other] different reasons for it. We're going to be close to selecting a white ball team for what's a massive series against India, T20 cricket and ODI cricket. So Harry, as well as what's happened in the past, has a huge amount on his plate and we don't want to burden him with that, having to deal with everything."
Harry Brook is England's Test vice-captain and also leads the white-ball teams. He has also faced disciplinary issues in the past. During England's tour of New Zealand last year, he was fined after an incident involving a nightclub bouncer on the eve of the third ODI.
Joe Root Returns as England Turn to Experience
Joe Root stepped down as England's full-time Test captain in April 2022 after leading the side since 2017. The management have now turned to his experience during a challenging period for the team.
England have also added Jofra Archer and Jordan Cox to the squad for the second Test against New Zealand. Archer missed the opening Test due to workload management after representing Rajasthan Royals until Qualifier 2 of IPL 2026.
Jordan Cox has been drafted into the squad as a replacement for the suspended Ben Stokes. The batter recently returned from Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2026 title-winning campaign, where he spent the season as part of the squad.
