The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) sought emergency help from the UK government after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reportedly threatened to abandon the Lord’s Test. The tensions came after Sky Sports' interview with former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan during the Day 1 lunch break.
England, led by Joe Root, strengthened their position in the second Test of the three-match series. The home team bowled Pakistan out for just 110 runs in the first innings, with Ollie Robinson taking four wickets. England then extended their overall lead to 261 runs by reaching 81/3 at stumps on Day 2.
ECB Contacts UK Foreign Office Over 2006 Oval Forfeiture Fears
According to the Daily Mail, ECB chief executive Richard Gould contacted Foreign Office officials after the PCB reportedly threatened to disrupt the restart of play and potentially withdraw from the England tour.
The situation raised memories of the 2006 Oval Test, when Pakistan refused to return to the field after tea following a dispute over a ball-tampering decision. England were awarded the match, which remains the only forfeited Test in cricket history.
Pakistan’s players were ready to return for the second session, and the match continued without any disruption. Head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed said that neither he nor his players knew about the threat. PTV, which used Sky Sports’ international feed, replaced the interview with ads for viewers in Pakistan.
Michael Atherton Interview Highlights Imran Khan's Prison Conditions
Former England captain Michael Atherton recorded an 18-minute interview with Imran Khan’s sons, Suleiman Khan and Kasim Khan. During the interview, Suleiman and Kasim raised concerns about their 73-year-old father’s treatment, health and security while he remains in prison.
They also criticised the UK government’s response to his situation, adding a political dimension to the cricket series. The brothers alleged that Imran is kept in isolation for more than 23 hours a day at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
Pakistani authorities have rejected allegations of mistreatment and maintained that Imran is receiving appropriate medical care. The former prime minister recently underwent a medical examination in Islamabad before returning to Adiala Jail.
Imran has remained in prison since August 2023 after being convicted in corruption-related cases. The former Pakistan prime minister has denied the allegations and continues to remain a major political figure in the country.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is also serving as Pakistan’s interior minister. Imran is one of the most prominent figures in Pakistan’s sporting and political history. Before entering politics, he enjoyed a 21-year international cricket career and became one of the country’s most successful all-rounders.
Imran played 88 Tests and 175 ODIs for Pakistan. He scored 3,807 Test runs and took 362 wickets, while his greatest achievement came as captain when he led Pakistan to their maiden ODI World Cup title in 1992.
Pakistan defeated England in the 1992 World Cup final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. After Pakistan slipped to 24/2, Imran and Javed Miandad added 139 runs for the third wicket. Imran scored 72, while Miandad made 58.
The victory gave Pakistan their first men’s ODI World Cup title. It also became the defining moment of Imran’s cricket career before he later moved into politics and became Pakistan’s prime minister in 2018.
