Australia Women’s National Cricket Team superstar Ellyse Perry has raised concerns over the lack of international cricket for the team during the peak home summer. Ellyse Perry feels the Australia Women’s National Cricket Team should have a bigger and more regular presence in front of their home fans, especially around Christmas and New Year.

Australia are the No. 1 team in both ODI and T20I cricket and will play six white-ball matches in the next two weeks. They will face Bangladesh in three ODIs before taking on New Zealand in three T20Is. The first ODI will be played on October 9 at Allan Border Field in Brisbane. After that, Australia will face a long five-month gap at home. Their next international assignment will be a three-match ODI series against New Zealand in March 2027, followed by the Women’s Ashes in England in June 2027. This means the Australia Women’s National Cricket Team will not play an international match at home during the traditional summer window.

Ellyse Perry feels this is a missed opportunity for women’s cricket in Australia. The veteran all-rounder believes that regular home matches during the busiest part of the cricket season could help bring more fans to the stadiums and grow the game further in the country.

Perry was quoted as saying, by the Sydney Morning Herald, "Our exposure to playing at home is fairly limited. I think it would be amazing for us to continue to grow the game in Australia by playing in front of home fans at the height of Australian cricket summer.”

WPL has crept into the January window: Ellyse Perry

Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and India’s Women’s Premier League (WPL) cause the major problem in scheduling. The WBBL will run from October 29 to December 5, while the WPL is scheduled from January 14 to February 7.

The WPL has taken up a major part of the January window, which is normally an important period of the Australian summer, and Perry didn’t shy from ruing the fact that they will miss playing in front of their home crowd. Amid this, Matthew Hayden, Ian Healy fire back at Travis Head's scathing criticism of 'past players'.

Perry further shared, “The WPL has crept into the January window, which for me is the height of the Australian summer. For there not to be an opportunity for the Australian team to play in that window feels really sad in a lot of senses. It’s an amazing privilege to play overseas in different countries … but I don’t think anything resonates quite the same as being able to represent your country in front of your own fans.”

Ellyse Perry calls for big changes in Women’s Cricket scheduling

The RCB all-rounder also believes that the women’s team needs its own identity when it comes to scheduling. She feels the players would love to play during the heart of the Australian summer, when cricket gets the most attention.

She also feels women’s cricket should also have matches on Boxing Day and New Year. She further explained her concern by saying, “It’s going to be really important going forward to be proactive about how we see the game and how we schedule it and not go down the same path or follow the same blueprint as men’s cricket.”

Perry signed off by saying, “Something like that doesn’t exist for the women’s team … and so it’s really increasingly hard year-to-year if it’s a little bit patchworky as to when we play. That’s not to say there isn’t effort to do that. It’s just such a convoluted schedule.”
