The Australian National Cricket Team has suffered a massive blow as Mitchell Starc, one of the fiercest fast bowlers of his generation, has announced his retirement from T20 Internationals.

Starc has decided to step away from T20I cricket just six months before the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The 35-year-old speedster last played a T20I match at the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies last year.

Now, Starc wants to focus on Test and ODI formats in the final phase of his glorious career for Australia, and that’s why the seasoned bowler quit the shorter format of the game.

From mid-2026, Australia’s schedule is packed with the challenging Test series, including a home series against Bangladesh, a tough tour of South Africa, four tests with New Zealand, five tests in India starting in January 2027, the historic 150th anniversary match against England at the MCG, and the Ashes series later that year.

Additionally, there is also the ICC World Cup 2025 scheduled in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, where Australia will defend their crown.

I have loved every minute of every T20I game: Mitchell Starc

Starc has confirmed that he will continue playing Tests and ODIs for Australia as well as the Indian Premier League (IPL) and domestic cricket.

Aussie pacer said in an official statement, “Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority. I have loved every minute of every T20 game I have played for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup, not just because we won but because of the incredible group and the fun along the way.”

The Australian fast bowler further added, “Looking ahead to an away Indian Test tour, the Ashes, and an ODI World Cup in 2027, I feel this is my best way forward to remain fresh, fit, and at my best for those campaigns. It also gives the bowling group time to prepare for the T20 World Cup in the matches leading into that tournament.”

George Bailey confirms Australia will celebrate Mitchell Starc's T20 career

Meanwhile, Australian chief selector George Bailey paid tribute to Starc by saying the pacer should be incredibly proud of his T20 career. He mentioned that Starc was an integral member of Australia’s 2021 World Cup-winning side and hailed his wicket-taking ability with the new ball.

Bailey stated, “We will acknowledge and celebrate his T20 career at the right time, but pleasingly he remains focused on continuing to play Test and ODI cricket for as long as possible.”

Starc’s retirement from T20I cricket marks another chapter in Australia’s transition. Following David Warner’s retirement last year, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis have already retired from ODI cricket, which is a clear signal of the end of their golden era.
