England Test captain Ben Stokes has said that he would undergo knee surgery after the conclusion of the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The allrounder is currently in India for the marquee event after deciding to come out of ODI retirement to help his side defend the World Cup title.
The campaign, however, has not gone well for Ben Stokes as well as England so far. The reigning champions are currently languishing at the bottom spot in the points table with just 1 win from 6 games. The veteran allrounder, on the other hand, missed the first three games before returning to action but has failed to inspire his team so far.
Playing as a specialist batter, he has registered scores of 5, 43, and 0 in three innings. While England are all but out of the semifinals race, they still have a lot to play for. They will be desperate to win their remaining three games to finish in the top 8 in order to secure a spot for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Ben Stokes would also be keen to do well in the remaining games of what is likely to be his last ODI World Cup.
Ben Stokes to undergo knee surgery:
Speaking ahead of England’s match against Australia, Ben Stokes confirmed that he would go under the knife after the World Cup. He has been dealing with the knee problem for a long time. Earlier this year, he bowled just 1 over and managed to bowl only a handful of overs during the Ashes series at home due to the problematic knee. In fact, he has not bowled in competitive cricket since the second Ashes Test in July.
“When we go to those meetings we generally take a physio and doctor and they start talking and I just turn up, go to sleep, wake up and hope it is better,” said Ben Stokes.
“I am having surgery after the World Cup. I will be fine for the Test series in India,” he added.
England are scheduled to visit India for a five-match Test series at the beginning of next year and the England captain is hopeful of recovering in time for the big series. The series is scheduled to begin on January 25 in Hyderabad.

It is understood England will fly to the United Arab Emirates for a practice camp before the India series, leaving him around eight weeks to recover in time to travel with the squad.
