After testing positive for Covid-19, Marcus Trescothick was unable to join the England squad in Leeds. Trescothick, the men’s batting coach for England, has remained at home in Somerset, isolating himself. His comeback to the squad has not yet been decided.

Ben Stokes was also absent from England’s training session in Leeds on Tuesday (June 21). The England captain was also sick, but his Covid test came back negative. The team management is hopeful that he will be able to train again on Wednesday (June 22). Since Stokes’ appointment, no vice-captain has been named. Stokes will not be re-tested until he exhibits new symptoms on Wednesday. No additional players will be evaluated unless they exhibit symptoms.

Six members of the New Zealand touring group have tested positive in recent weeks including four players and two backroom staff – but they are all available for the third LV= Insurance Test.

James Anderson Might Not Feature In Third Test

There may also be some doubts regarding James Anderson’s fitness coming into the third Test. Anderson did take a short bowling session in training on Tuesday (June 21), but he looked far from his best, with whispers circulating around the squad that he is suffering from an ankle ailment.

England are reportedly considering leaving him out in order to have him fully healthy for the long-awaited final Test of the India series, which begins on July 1 at Edgbaston. There will only be three days between games if the Leeds Test lasts five days. If Anderson is absent, Jamie Overton is set to get into the England lineup. England are also considering resting Stuart Broad, if that happens Jamie’s twin brother Craig Overton might play as well.

It must be mentioned that Joe Root might captain England again if Stokes remains unavailable for the third Test.
