Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram humorously suggested a unique tactic for Babar Azam’s team to potentially qualify for the semifinals of the ICC World Cup 2023. Wasim Akram stated that Pakistan should prevent the England team from taking the field.

The Babar Azam-led team appears to be nearly out of the semifinal race after New Zealand secured a victory over Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, November 9. The Black Caps clinched a crucial win, their fifth during the World Cup.

Mathematically It Is Still Possible – Wasim Akram

Speaking to the local news channel A Sports, Wasim Akram proposed that Pakistan should bat first against England, set a target, and then prevent the England team from taking to the field, forcing a timed-out scenario.

“Mathematically it is still possible,” quips Wasim Akram on A Sports.

“Pakistan should bat first against England and post runs, then lock the England team in the dressing room and get them timed out,” Akram added.

The Men in Green are currently in fifth place in the table with 8 points to their tally. They can achieve a maximum of 10 points at the end of league-stage matches. However, their NNR is lower than that of New Zealand, making it difficult for them to reach the semi-finals.

The Babar Azam-led team will take on defending champion England in their final league stage match at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, November 11.

Few Teams Can End Up On The Same Points – Kane Williamson

Speaking after New Zealand’s victory, skipper Kane Williamson admitted that a few teams might end up with the same points. Williamson expressed his enthusiasm for the potential semi-final involvement and looked forward to the challenge ahead.

“Few teams can end up on the same points, it’s about control. Hopefully, we can get a couple of days off, we’ll be hanging around, not really sure what we’ll do. Hopefully, if things go our way, would be great to be involved in a semi. Will be looking forward to the challenge,” Kane Williamson said.

The Kane Williamson-led team will potentially face Rohit Sharma’s team in the semi-final match in Kolkata on Thursday, November 16, if they advance to the knockout stage of the prestigious tournament.
