England veteran paceman James Anderson stressed the importance of having Jofra Archer fit for the upcoming T20 World Cup and Ashes. Since his international debut in 2019, Jofra Archer has played defining roles at some point in all the formats for England. James Anderson believes that the national side will require the Barbadian for the World Cup and the tour down under this year.
Jofra Archer recently underwent surgery on his right middle finger to remove a piece of glass that impacted his bowling. The 25-year old’s elbow injury resurfaced in a county game, causing him to rule out of the upcoming Test series against New Zealand. Though Archer reportedly underwent a successful surgery on his elbow, the England management asserted they would not rush his comeback, with two high-voltage tournaments on the radar this year.
James Anderson predicts that it will take time for Jofra Archer to get it right and underlined that England needs him for the Ashes and T20 World Cup this year. The 38-year old, who himself has gone through several injuries, understands the complications of being a fast bowler. But he revealed that Archer remains confident of coming back strongly.
“It might take a bit of time over the summer to get it right but from an English point of view we need him fighting fit for the winter with the T20 World Cup and the Ashes. It’s tough when you have a recurring injury like that but as a bowler it’s part and parcel of the job, really. He sounds upbeat and confident that he is going to come back strong,” Anderson told Sky Sports.
He loves bowling quick: James Anderson
James Anderson further claimed that pace is Jofra Archer’s strongest suit; hence, he would be keen to retain it as he loves bowling quick. The Lancashire seamer hopes for the right-arm speedster to recover from his injury and bounce back stronger.
“The reason he has had such an impact in international cricket is his pace so that’s something he will be looking to keep hold of. He loves bowling quick – it’s what he does best – and I’m sure it’s what he will want to do when he comes back. Hopefully he gets the recovery he needs and comes back stronger,” he added.
