England Playing 11 vs Afghanistan: England take on Afghanistan in match 13 of the ICC World Cup 2023 on Sunday, October 15. The match starts at 2 pm IST in Delhi and is an uphill task for Afghanistan who are yet to win a World Cup game since the last edition of the World Cup.
England started their campaign with a loss against the New Zealand National Team. They bounced back brilliantly with a 137-run win over Bangladesh in their next match.
Ben Stokes did not play the first two games and his inclusion in the side seems to be a major problem for his team. Stokes is struggling with a hip injury and there is no update as yet whether he will play the next game against Afghanistan.
England will be led by Jos Buttler. Ben Stokes has come out of retirement to play the ODI World Cup for his side. Joe Root too is a part of the side as is Harry Brook who was a late entrant into the side. The England batters have shared the responsibility of run-scoring so far in the tournament.

Joe Root
Joe Root will bat at number three. He scored 77 against England and 82 against Bangladesh. He has the necessary experience to counter the spin threat of Afghanistan. The former skipper has brought about a big change in his white-ball game in recent times.
Harry Brook / Ben Stokes
Brook will slot in at four. He scored 25 off 16 balls against New Zealand and 20 off 15 balls against Bangladesh. He will have to sit out if Ben Stokes gets fit to play. In case he doesn’t Brook gets another game.
Jos Buttler (C/WK)
Jos Buttler will lead England and bat at five. He scored 43 off 42 balls against New Zealand and 20 off 20 balls against Bangladesh. He would aim to win big as a skipper against Afghanistan by making the right calls as captain.
Liam Livingstone
Livingstone will bat at six. He was out for a first-ball duck against Bangladesh and will look to score big against Afghanistan. He picked up 1 for 13 with the ball. He is 35 short of 500 ODI runs.
Sam Curran
Curran will bat at seven. He is one of the all-rounders in the XI. He scored 14 off 19 balls against New Zealand and picked up 1 for 37 with the ball. Against Bangladesh, he was expensive with the ball going for 47 runs in less than 8 overs.
Chris Woakes
Chris Woakes will bat at eight. He was expensive with the ball against New Zealand going for 45 runs in just six overs. Against Bangladesh, he picked up two for 49 and scored 14 off 11.
Adil Rashid
Rashid will slot in at 10. He is the specialist leg spinner in the XI. He was expensive as well with the ball going for 47 runs against the Kiwis. The leggie picked 1 for 42 against the Tigers. He is amongst the premier leg spinners in world cricket.
Reece Topley
Left-arm seamer Reece Topley will slot in at 10. He picked up 4./43 against Bangladesh and was the best of the England bowlers. He will hunt for early wickets against Afghanistan.
Mark Wood
Wood concludes the likely playing XI for England. He has by far been the fastest pacer in this World Cup so far. He went for 55 in just five overs against the Kiwis. He picked up 1 for 29 against Bangladesh.
