England will take on the West Indies in the first of the three-match ODI series. This article provides details about England's Playing 11 vs West Indies for the first of the three-match ODI series.
England Playing 11 vs West Indies- 1st ODI, West Indies tour of England 2025:
Openers: Jos Buttler, Ben Duckett
Former English white ball captain Jos Buttler will open the innings for the home side in the first ODI against West Indies and will be partnered by Ben Duckett.
The pair will look to shrug off the disappointing performance that the team delivered in the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India and in the Champions Trophy.
Buttler and Duckett are known for their aggressive batting approach at the top of the order and will look to replicate the same in the upcoming game.
Duckett will look to put on a solid show with the bat and carry on the rich vein of form he has been in.
Buttler, on the other hand, is now one of the senior members of the team and would want to take the confidence of his IPL performance in the first ODI at Edgbaston.
Middle-order batsmen and all-rounders: Jamie Smith (wk), Joe Root, Harry Brook (c), Jacob Bethell
The opening combination will be followed by a relatively inexperienced batting which comprises Jamie Smith, the newly appointed skipper, Harry Brook, and spin bowling all-rounder Jacob Bethell.
The composition of the middle order makes Joe Root a very important part of the current English ODI setup, which hasn't been able to make a significant contribution in the last year or so.
Having said that, the first ODI against the West Indies is a chance for these less-experienced batters to get some runs under their belt.
England will surely miss someone like Ben Stokes, who played an important part in guiding the team to their first ODI World Cup title.
Bowlers: Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Mathew Potts, Adil Rashid, Saqib Mahmood
England will field a fairly new-look bowling attack with the likes of Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes not a part of the ODI series against the West Indies.
The duo of Saqib Mahmood and Mathew Potts is expected to take the new ball. Both bowlers will have an opportunity to put on a solid display of fast bowling against the West Indies openers.
Mahmood and Potts will hope to get good support from fellow fast bowlers Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton, both of whom have impressed the experts with the way they have bowled so far.
The fast bowling department will have to take responsibility for themselves in the absence of a genuine all-rounder like Stokes, who can be relied upon to bowl a few overs when the need arises.
As far as England's spin bowling is concerned, all eyes will be on Adil Rashid, who will be supported by Jacob Bethell. Adil Rashid, the leg spinner, is the most experienced spinner in the English bowling lineup.
