England, on Tuesday (July 16), announced their playing eleven for the second Test against West Indies, scheduled to get underway on July 18 at Trent Bridge.

As expected, the hosts have made one change to their playing eleven due to the retirement of James Anderson. The legendary bowler brought down curtains on his illustrious Test career after the first Test at Lord's last week.

Three bowlers were in contention to replace Anderson in the playing eleven - Matthew Potts, Dillon Pennington, and Mark Wood. Potts and Pennington were in the squad for the first Test too while Wood was added to the squad for the second game.

And for the upcoming game, Wood has got the nod ahead of Potts and Pennington in the England playing XI. The right-arm pacer last played for England during the T20 World Cup last month. He played 5 games in the competition and picked up 3 wickets as England bowed out at the semifinal stage. Wood's last Test appearance came in March this year during the Dharamsala Test against India.

England take the lead:

Talking about the series, England took the lead with a big win in the first Test. The Ben Stokes-led side totally outplayed West Indies at Lord's to win the game by an innings and 114 runs. The match ended in just over two days as West Indies just could not pose any challenge for their fancied hosts.

Asked to bat first, West Indies were bowled out for just 121 runs. They did well to not lose any wickets in the first ten overs but things went downhill once debutant Gus Atkinson broke the opening stand. Atkinson went on to take a sensational 7-wicket haul to help his side take command.

In reply, England finished their innings on 351 runs to take a big lead of 250 runs thanks to half-centuries from Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and debutant Jamie Smith. In the second innings, West Indies' batter underperformed once again as England bowled them out for just 136 runs.
