The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is expected to take a landmark decision in an appointment. For the first time, the board is likely to appoint a former Australian cricketer as a national selector.

In place of Luke Wright, ESB is poised to appoint former Australia international Marcus North as their new national selector. According to a Telegraph report, Marcus North has been chosen after final interviews this week. However, an official statement is yet to be released regarding the appointment.

It will be a landmark decision by the England cricket board

If the claims are proven true, then Marcus North would become the first foreigner in charge of selecting the England men's team. ECB, in their recruitment notification for the position of the national selector to replace Luke Wright, who stepped down from the job, mentioned some criteria. Understanding England cricket talents well from the grass roots level, which is the county cricket, is among the main cricketries.

In their official release, the ECB mentioned, “significant professional experience and intimate knowledge of international and first-class cricket, including knowledge of emerging players and county network” is mandatory in applicants’ resumes.

Criteria the ECB has been looking for in their future national team selector:

  1. Demonstrable experience in talent identification
  2. A strong understanding of data and analytics within cricket
  3. The ability to manage relationships with cricketers at international and county levels

Why should the ECB select the former Australian batter for the job?

Marcus North ticked all of the above mentioned criteries, and undoubtedly, he is one of the best candidates to attempt the interview session.

Despite being an Australian, Marcus North has vast experience in English cricket, as he played for multiple county teams, and then worked in a managerial role as well.

Since 2018, he has been the director of cricket at Durham. Here, has worked alongside England Test captain Ben Stokes. If ECB selects North for the role, then the 46-year-old will have to work alongside head coach Brendon McCullum, director of cricket Rob Key, and the Test and limited-overs captains, Stokes and Harry Brook, respectively.

What will be the role for Marcus North?

The 4-1 Ashes defeat against the arch-rival Australia is still haunting England cricket. In the Brendon McCullum era, the England cricket team has gained a reputation for igniting the county talents. The national selector’s duty will be to work like a bridge between the cricketers in county cricket and the national cricket team. North’s experience in England’s domestic cricket will help them to scout some fresh talent.

Opener Zak Crawley is among the batters who proved absolute flop against Australia. The Three Lions are expected to name a new opener to replace Crawley soon.

“Under McCullum, England have often ignored proven performers from county cricket in favour of the players they believe to have the attributes for international cricket. It will perhaps be North's role to provide balance to England's methods,” the BBC claimed in their report.

“He may only have a limited involvement in the process of choosing a squad for the first Test against New Zealand, beginning at Lord's on 4 June,” it added.
