Play By Laws And Game Will Take Care Of Itself - Former Australian Pacer Jason Gillespie

Deepti Sharma’s run out of Charlie Dean on non-end strikers sparked a huge debate on social media, with people arguing over the legality of the dismissal, how it looked and whether it was in the spirit of the game even if it was within the rules.

Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie feels that cricketers should follow the rules when it comes to running batters out at the non-striker’s end in delivery strides.

Speaking to reporters at the Kolkata airport after arriving in India, Deepti said that she and her teammates were constantly warning Charlie Dean about leaving the crease early at the non-strikers’ end, but she didn’t listen.

India Shouldn’t Feel The Need To Justify – Heather Knight

England women’s national captain Heather Knight, wasn’t impressed with Deepti’s words as she accused her of lying saying that there wasn’t any warning. Knight said that Dean was dismissed legitimately and the Indian team shouldn’t need to lie to justify the dismissal.

“The game is over, Charlie was dismissed legitimately. India were deserved winners of the match and the series. But no warnings were given. They don’t need to be given, so it hasn’t made the dismissal any less legitimate,” Knight said.

“But if they’re comfortable with the decision to affect the run out, India shouldn’t feel the need to justify it by lying about warnings,” she added.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan then jumped into the debate and replied to Knight and wrote, “Surely we should just ask the umpire whether a warning was given .. ?”

Former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie said that the batsman was unfairly backing up before the ball was bowled, and there was no need for a warning because the MCC laws don’t specify any mandatory warning.

Gillespie wrote, “Sorry- there is nothing in the law that says a warning should ever be given for unfair play. Play by the laws and the game will take care of itself.”

Dean’s wicket was the last to fall, and India won the three-match series 3-0 by defeating England by 16 runs.
