MS Dhoni has reportedly pressed the reset button at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027. CSK are considering major changes to their coaching setup after three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance, with Eoin Morgan emerging as a possible option for the head coach role.

Morgan has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Fleming as head coach of the five-time IPL champions. Ravichandran Ashwin recently added to the speculation around Morgan. The five-time champions will need to appoint their new head coach soon to plan for the IPL 2027 mini-auction.

Eoin Morgan’s ₹18-20 Crore Demand Could Delay Chennai Super Kings Appointment

Rohit Juglan of RevSportz has provided an update on CSK’s search for a new head coach. He stated that talks with Morgan have been positive, but his salary demand has become a major hurdle. The former England captain is reportedly seeking around ₹18-20 crore for the role.

“CSK fans, two of the biggest updates. Eoin Morgan, ₹20 crore? Why are they not considering Mike Hussey as the next head coach? First of all, before IPL 2027, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has already pressed the reset button for the betterment of CSK."

"The conversations with Eoin Morgan have been fruitful, but the amount he is asking to become CSK’s new head coach is so high that you could set up the entire coaching setup with that money. The figure is at least around ₹18 to ₹20 crore. Chennai Super Kings is not entertaining that amount at the moment, but let’s wait.”

Eoin Morgan has never served as a head coach at the international or franchise level, but his leadership experience remains a major strength. He led England to the 2019 ODI World Cup title and also captained Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL 2021 final, where they lost to CSK.

MS Dhoni Wants a Fresh Chennai Super Kings Setup Ahead of IPL 2027

Rohit Juglan also stated that Michael Hussey could not be considered for the role. He added that Dhoni had already decided after the 2026 season that CSK needed changes to their coaching setup to bring a fresh approach to the team.

“The second thing is, why can’t Mike Hussey become the next head coach? Mahendra Singh Dhoni believes that, and it was decided after the previous season itself, that the entire coaching setup needs to be changed. If not completely, then at least some people need to be replaced so that a fresh mindset can be brought into the team. So, he is thinking about the reset.”

Hussey has a strong connection with CSK, having played for the franchise from 2008 to 2013 before returning for the 2015 season after a year with Mumbai Indians. He also served as the team’s batting coach.

CSK Begin New Era After Stephen Fleming’s Exit

Chennai Super Kings are entering a new phase after Stephen Fleming ended his 18-year association with the franchise in July 2026. Fleming first joined CSK as a player in 2008 and became their head coach before the 2009 season.

Under Fleming, Chennai Super Kings won five IPL titles and reached 10 finals. The franchise won its fifth championship in 2023 but then missed the playoffs in three successive seasons. CSK finished fifth in 2024, 10th in 2025, and eighth in 2026.

Fleming also followed Dhoni to Rising Pune Supergiant for the 2016 and 2017 seasons before returning to CSK when the franchise came back to the IPL in 2018.
