England’s 2019 World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan’s name has been linked with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach job recently, but the latest update has changed the picture.
There have reportedly been no talks between Chennai Super Kings and Morgan so far, so the former England captain’s chances of taking over the charge look unlikely at this stage. Chennai Super Kings are still looking for their next head coach after parting ways with Stephen Fleming.
Eoin Morgan unlikely to become Chennai Super Kings head coach
There have been reports that Eoin Morgan is set to join the Chennai Super Kings as their new head coach ahead of the upcoming IPL 2027. Some reports even claimed that CSK is ready to meet all the demands made by the former England captain for the head coach position.
However, fresh updates shared by a PTI journalist suggest that Morgan is unlikely to become CSK’s new head coach. The journalist claimed that even preliminary discussions between Morgan and CSK have not yet happened, so all these things are just rumours as of now.
It is also being said that the Chennai Super Kings’ next head coach will be decided by a three-member Cricket Management Committee. MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and CSK owner Rupa Gurunath will have a key role in making the decision.

Baba Aparajith NOT joining Chennai Super Kings coaching staff
There has also been some confusion over Baba Aparajith and a possible Chennai Super Kings coaching role. Some reports claimed that it was his brother Baba Indrajith, but it was Aparajith. However, Aparajith is not joining the CSK support staff, as shared by the PTI journalist.
Aparajith had helped Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube when they trained at CSK’s High-Performance Centre in Chennai. Actually, Aparajith plays for a CSK-run team in the TNCA league, so he was also there, and he just helped the CSK wicketkeeper-batter and the star all-rounder.
So, Aparajith’s presence during those training sessions at CSK’s High-Performance Centre is not like that; he is joining the IPL team’s coaching setup. So, all those were only reports.
MS Dhoni wants Indian coach at Chennai Super Kings
The CSK team missed the IPL playoffs for the third season in a row, and that ended Stephen Fleming’s long run as head coach. Fleming had been in charge of CSK since 2009 and played a major role in the team’s success over the years. Now, the franchise is looking for a new coach.
MS Dhoni has been given an important role in the process. It is being said that Dhoni is now strongly supporting the idea of bringing in an Indian coach. The owners have not made a final decision yet. They are still comparing both options before choosing Fleming’s replacement.
Dhoni wants full focus on Chennai Super Kings
One reason for considering an overseas coach is Fleming’s long and successful record with Chennai Super Kings. However, finding an overseas coach with strong IPL experience is not easy. There could also be a major change in the coach’s responsibilities.
Fleming was not only CSK’s head coach but also worked with the Johannesburg Super Kings in SA20 and the Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket. Dhoni reportedly wants the next Chennai Super Kings head coach to focus only on the IPL franchise.
Having coaches work with different T20 teams is common, but Chennai Super Kings may now want a different approach. This could also affect the new coach’s earnings, although it is not clear if CSK would offer extra money for the cover.
