Essex cricketer Robin Das has been charged with two counts of rape by the Metropolitan Police. The 24-year-old batter, who has Bangladeshi origins, has been asked to appear at the Inner London Crown Court on October 9 in connection with allegations relating to an incident in Brixton in March 2024.
Das was arrested on August 27, 2025, and was later released on bail before being charged on July 23, 2026. Essex subsequently suspended him, with his last appearance for the county coming against Middlesex in the One-Day Cup on July 21. He scored 29 in that match before being charged two days later.
Metropolitan Police Confirms Charges Against Robin Das
The Metropolitan Police said Robin Das was charged following an investigation into reports of a woman being raped in Brixton on March 30, 2024. The force also confirmed that the woman continues to receive support from specialist officers.
“Robin Das of Queens Road, Waltham Forest, was charged on 23 July 2026 with two counts of rape. The charges follow his arrest on 27 August 2025, following reports of a woman being raped in Brixton on 30 March 2024. The woman continues to be supported by specialist officers.”
The right-handed batter made his Essex debut in 2020 and has made 60 appearances for the county across all formats. He has played nine first-class matches and 29 List A games for Essex, while also making 24 T20 appearances during his career.
Das scored a century against Ireland in a first-class match in 2023. Later that year, he was part of the Essex side that reached the T20 Blast final, where they lost to Somerset at Edgbaston. He also made two T20 appearances for Dhaka Dominators in the Bangladesh Premier League.
Essex Suspends Robin Das After Court Appearance
Essex confirmed that a contracted member of its playing staff had appeared in court and was subject to an immediate and ongoing suspension. Although the club did not name Das in its statement, the timing of the charge, suspension and his absence from the team corresponded with the case.
“Essex County Cricket Club can confirm that a male member of the playing staff, currently under contract with the club, recently appeared in court in relation to an incident that took place outside club activities.”
The club added that it had remained in contact with the ECB, Professional Cricketers’ Association and Cricket Regulator, as well as the player, throughout the matter.
“Throughout, the club has remained in contact with the ECB, PCA, the Cricket Regulator and the player with regard to the matter, which included an immediate and ongoing suspension.”
Alex Hepburn Case Provides Previous Cricket Precedent
The case involving Robin Das comes after previous legal and disciplinary proceedings involving cricketers in England. Former Worcestershire all-rounder Alex Hepburn was convicted of rape in 2019 and sentenced to five years in prison.
After his release, Hepburn later approached Oswestry Cricket Club about training or playing for the team, but the club’s committee rejected the proposal.
In September 2024, the Cricket Discipline Commission imposed a 10-year suspension from playing cricket under the ECB’s jurisdiction, backdated to October 30, 2021, the date of his release from prison.
The CDC decision also stated that Hepburn would have to complete appropriate treatment, where applicable, and education or training requirements before being permitted to undertake cricket-related activity under ECB authority.
