Devender Sharma, the assistant of famous Indian cricket coach Tarak Sinha, who played a key part in bringing Pant’s genius to India, recounted a time when Pant summoned the bravery to play an IPL match and bail his team out of danger despite struggling with the devastating loss of his father.
Virat Kohli’s decision to play game-saving innings for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy a day after his dad’s passing is one of the bravest acts in Indian cricket history. But did you know that when Rishabh Pant was faced with a similar catastrophe, he showed the same bravery and mental toughness?
Pant’s cricketing beginnings are at the Sonnet Cricket Club in Delhi, which was run by Sinha, a well-known coach in the domestic cricket circuit. Pant was devastated when he lost his coach last November.
He had added, “It was like losing my father all over again.” Devender recounted how the news of Sinha’s death affected Pant hard, but that his mental toughness helped him overcome the tragedy.
Rishabh Pant is mentally strong even when his father died, he came back: Devender
“When the news of Ustaad Jim’s cancer diagnosis first broke, he was shocked. When Sir was in England, we even gave him reports. Rishabh was advised by the doctor to seek treatment in Delhi or Jaipur. When Sir died, he was distraught; we all expected Sir to fight it out.”
“Pant, on the other hand, is mentally strong; even when his father died, he returned two days later to play in an IPL game and score runs “Devender mentioned.
Rishabh Pant’s father, Rajendra Pant, died of cardiac arrest in 2017, and two days later, he struck an emotional half-century for the Delhi Capitals.
